Reality does not need your acceptance of it to be true,
but it doesrequire your acceptance for you to enjoy its gifts.

SoulCollage Expressions
Ideas and Challenges to Spice Up Your SoulCollage Practice

Challenge of the Week

Gold in the Shadows

In our recent Members Survey, one of our Members (Kathleen in Australia) posed a question about creating cards for shadowy neters.  I wasn't absolutely sure how to answer it, so I posed the question to Seena. Printed below are both the question and response.  Thank you to Kathleen and Seena for sharing their wisdom with us here.

So your Challenge this week is to read the question and answer below, carefully, and take a look through your own Deck. Find one dark or shadowy card, and ask it what "gold" it is carrying for you.

Kathleen's Question: Aboutmaking cards for toxic energies- I know Seena says that it is not a good ideato do this, but I was wondering whether the act of making such a card/collagewould allow healing to take place and/or allow for deeper layers of meaning, other Neters to be revealed?

Seena's response: Ionly recommend not making cards for toxic Community Neters, ones whohave no energy that could be useful in a reading. This is not at all true ofthe other suits. We have much more responsibility internally for all our otherNeters, and more ability to work with them and balance them. It is imperativethat we become conscious of manifested and even potential shadow energy in theother Neters because we are directly impacted by this shadow energy. We can'tjust avoid it as we can with a Community Neter's input.  Hence many of ourcards, especially for Committee Neters, will show shadow energy in theimages.  I prefer here to use the word shadowed energy rather thantoxic.  Shadowed energy to me includes alot of primitive and vital energyeven if it is wrongly used, or is over the top. This primitive energy is whatJung called the 'gold' in the shadow, something to be consciously mined andredirected so it can be positively used.  The word toxic seems to haveless vitality or positive force for good...and that's why I have only used itto identify and exclude  Community members that have nothing at all ofworth to offer. Not even a good sort of challenge. No gold.

Soul Nourishment- Books

The Dinner Party:A Symbol of Our Heritage, by JudyChicago.  You HAVE to read this book, orat least take a look around the virtualtour of the Brooklyn Museum exhibition. The Dinner Partycomprises a massive ceremonial banquet, arranged on a triangular table with atotal of thirty-nine place settings, each commemorating an important woman (butmaybe not so well-known) from history. The settings consist of embroideredrunners, gold chalices and utensils, and china-painted porcelain plates withraised central motifs that are based on vulvar and butterfly forms and renderedin styles appropriate to the individual women being honored.

The names ofanother 999 women are inscribed in gold on the white tile floor below thetriangular table. This permanent installation can be viewed at the Brooklyn Museumin Brooklyn, New York. The book tells the story of how Judy came to create this breathtakingpiece of Art through her own journal entries, colorful sketches, andphotographs.  There is also a shortbiographical paragraph (or 2 or 3) of each of the 1038 oft-overlooked women inhistory who are honored in The DinnerParty.

There is another fascinating book (with lots more color photos!) about this aswell: The Dinner Party: From Creationto Preservation.

WhatI Know Now: Letters to My Younger Self,Edited by Ellen Spragins.  41extraordinary women share the wisdom they wish they'd had when they wereyounger. All of these short, wise essays answer the question: If you could send a letter back through timeto your younger self, what would the letter say?  I found this inspiring and dear.  Would make a beautiful gift for any youngwomen in your life as well.  Authorsinclude: Maya Angelou, Madeleine Albright, Ann Curry, Olympia Dukakis, MacyGray, Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack, Vanna White, Beverly Sills, NoraRoberts, Cokie Roberts, Phylicia Rashad, Jane Bryant Quinn, Camryn Manheim,Mary Matalin and more.

TheWay Life Should Be, by Christina Baker Kline.  I found this tobe a lovely, rich novel full of real people and the blessings of everydaylife.  It's about 30-something Angela who moves out of New York City andto a rural, little-known island in Maine (in the winter, no less!) simplybecause she feels drawn there and has nowhere else to go.  In searchingfor meaning for her life, she realizes what it is that she doesn't want andstarts drawing to her friends and situations that speak to her soul.  Thisbook was a refreshing reminder to me that life is all about following our ownhearts.
