Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage® into Your DailyLife

Journey Through the Chakras: Fourth Chakra

Idon't know about you, but when I started practicing SoulCollage, I knewvery little about the chakras.  I stepped out into the Companions Suitblindly trusting Seena's voice on her Introduction to SoulCollageCD.  My first steps into the Chakras found me chatting with a LittleBrown Bird in my Heart Chakra area.  After that, I spent a little timein each of the chakras as I discovered my Animal Companions who livedthere.

Lately, though, I've found myself longing toknow more about the Chakras, on a more personal level.  So I've decidedto take myself on a seven-month Journey Through the Chakras.

This article is one in a series on  eachof the seven chakras.  If you missed the previous articles,  you cancatch up on  the previous chakras by going to your Members Home Page and clicking on the" Soul Treasures Back Issues" icon.

Wide Open Heart

It's no coincidence at all that I'm writing about the Heart Chakra this particular month, as we celebrate our 100th issue of Soul Treasures.  According to Anodea Judith, author of The Sevenfold Journey: Reclaiming Mind, Body and Spirit Through the Chakras, this chakra is about: balance, love, compassion, relationship, breath, openness, peace, giving and grace.

Last month as I focused on the fourth chakra during my meditation times, I visualized this part of my body (heart and chest) surrounded with a bright emerald green light.  I breathed slowly into my heart each day and as I did, I felt it opening up a little bit more... releasing... letting go of an itchy tightness that's been present for a long time.

Also last month we received news that my husband's rare genetic eye disorder (cone-rod dystrophy) had worsened to the point where he is now legally blind.  A lot of changes happened in January as a result of this, and our marriage is now undergoing quite a few adjustments.

However, because I was focusing so intently on my heart chakra at the same time, I noticed that I was much better able to be present and open to my husband as he went through that distressing diagnosis.  I was able to open my heart to him and the flow of love between us was much richer because of this.

I also found myself thinking about all of you, dear KaleidoSoul Kindred Spirits.  How each of our hearts are open to one another through this Membership, and how we are all connected through this newsletter, Soul Treasures.

I thank you all, each and every one, from the bottom of my wide open heart... for the gift of your presence in this very special community.  The giving and receiving that happens here is at the essence of the heart chakra's teachings.  Thank you for making this membership what it is.  Thank you for reading Soul Treasures each week, and for letting me know that it is received with warmth and affection and humor.  I love you all!

The Voice of a Different Kindred Spirit EachWeek

Audrey Chowdhury
Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

I first became aware of SoulCollagewhen I saw the book at an art therapy conference.  I was very drawn to theprocess as it reflected my own experience in the healing power of art.  Ibecame interested in the field of art therapy because thismodality helped me to heal from childhood trauma, by helping me to collectthe "pieces" of my Self through art making.

The SoulCollageprocess became a natural way for me to continue this process in my own healingwork, and in helping others to uncover and connect with the many sides ofthe Self.  I find  that the structure of the deck and the guidelinesthat Seena gives us in creating and working with our decks create a containerfor the work of re-membering our Selves.  There is genius in this processas it gives definition and orgainization to the potentially confusingaspects we deal with when we do recovery work. It faciliates the proces ofintegrating our many voices and becoming whole in a beautifully simpleway.  The only words for it are inspired genuis.

I became certified as a Facilitator of this process in 2005, and have beenpresenting workshops on a regular basis since then.  I always tell myclients about the structure of the deck at the introductory workshops, andsometimes focus on a specific suit at others.  But, I also tell my clientsto allow this to be an intuitive, image-driven process, and to try not to thinktoo hard when collecting and arranging images.

Allow yourself to bedelighted and amazed by your creation.  Don't try to categorize it untilit is ready to tell you what it is.  I also emphasize Seena's guideline of speaking from the image.  The "I am one who..." statements are powerful affirmations which come from a very deep place.  I  tellclients that they are in charge of their process, and that whatever they createwill be just right for them that day, even if it does not seem to fit into asuit.

I have used the process in combination with Integrative Breathworkgroups, where the cards often tell the story of a journey.  I have runworkshops in many settings, and always find that the process has meaning forparticipants wherever they are in their life experience.  I also find that allowing others to use my deck for card Readings can be very meaningful. The three questions that I always ask the person to answer from the card they draw are: Who are you?  (I am one who...) What wisdom do you have for me? and What do you need from me?.

I make most of my cards during the workshops and retreats that I facilitate.Sometimes I will make a Community card for someone when I feel moved.  Myclients often tell me that they find it it easiest to make the cards during ourworkshops.  The group energy makes things flow. I find this to be true forme as well.   However, I have started a card making frenzy in manyfolks--who cannot stop making cards after they come to the first retreat. We sometimes get together for private sessions to help with putting cards insuits, and dialoguing with various cards.  They are such wonderfulcatalysts for processes such as voice dialoguing, and journaling in atherapeutic setting.

Here aretwo of Audrey's favorite SoulCollage cards:

Psyche

Council Suit

This card came about at the 3 Faces of Silenceretreat with Seena last January.   This card says:

I am one who is larger and more powerful than you can imagine. I am no longer hidden behind the small child that you once pretended tobe.

Grandfather
Community Suit

This is a Community Suit card that happenedunexpectedly.  I picked up an image that reminded me of my grandfather, even though I had nointention of making a card for him.

My workshop that day was focusedon the Council suit.  However, my grandfather, who died at least 20years ago, wouldn't let me avoid making this collage.  He is not aperson I felt I knew very well--but evidently he wants me to know himbetter.  He says:

I am one who has learned many lessons duringmy life times.  Pay attention to your ancestors, for we havemuch to teach you.

This card  is a good exampleof allowing the image to drive the process, regardless of my"intention" for the session.

Idea of the Week

Insights Box

Capture big insights gained from your work with SoulCollage, as well as otherawarenesses about yourself and your journey. I got an inexpensive wooden box at a local art/craft store, painted itsome of my favorite colors, and added embellishments.  Every time I get an insight, I write it on a4x6 index card and place it in the box. Once a week, I read through the cards as a way of allowing the insightsto sink deeper into my soul instead of forgetting them as I am likely to do ifI don't make note of them in this special way.
