The Dance of Surrender
The mood of autumn is the ebb and flow of life. Autumn stands as an epiphany to the truth that all things are passing and even in the passing there is beauty.
--- Joyce Rupp

Autumn has always been my favorite season, perhaps because it brings such sweet relief after the sometimes smothering heat of summer. I spent many a happy fall day in my childhood and adolescence walking in the delightful crunch of autumn leaves underfoot, savoring the rich colors of pumpkin and deep burgundy and sunlit gold.

I’m much older now, and I still do love this season, but I have a deeper understanding of its gifts. In her book, The Circle of Life (see link below), Joyce Rupp talks about the “dance of surrender” that autumn represents. It is a season of decaying, dying, and letting go. Animals surrender their lives, trees surrender their leaves, and we humans look inside our lives and our hearts and surrender that which doesn’t suit us any longer.

Like you, I have come to know a bit about letting go, about surrendering, and one thing I’ve discovered is that it’s much easier to do if I can keep my focus on where I’m heading, instead of what I’m leaving behind.

Joyce Rupp says:

As one by one the leaves let go, a precious emptiness appears in the trees. The naked beauty of the branches can be seen… the new spaces of emptiness reveal mountain ridges. At night if you stand beneath a tree and gaze upward, stars now peer through the branches. This is an important autumn lesson- when certain things fall away, there are other things that can be seen more clearly.

I love this imagery, don’t you? Once we are able to surrender that which doesn’t serve us, there is a quiet spaciousness inside that is the essence of autumn. Joyce Rupp refers to this as “the sacrament of absence.” This spaciousness, this emptiness, brings gifts with it that we do well to sit still and notice.

To me, autumn is a glorious metaphor for the transformation that seems to take place in my heart each September through November. The light changes outside my window, the days darken earlier and I am called to more and more time inside (my self and my home). Everything is preparing for winter. Leaves change color, die, and fall to the ground outside as I walk with our dog Suzy on increasingly chillier mornings.

And so, I am led to ask myself these questions:

*What have I harvested so far this year?

*What do I need to gather into the spiritual woodshed of my heart?

*What in my own life needs to fall away like autumn leaves so that I can revel in the emptiness as something new makes its way to me?

*How can I fully experience and embrace the sacredness of absence in my life? What is absent? How can I be with that absence and offer gratitude for it?

You might find journaling with these questions helpful sometime this month.

I’d also like to share with you a wonderfully simple activity from The Circle of Life (see link below) that you might like to try. Go for a walk and gather some autumn leaves. If you don’t live in a part of the earth that is experiencing autumn right now, trace some on colored paper or get some inexpensive ones at a craft store. Let each leaf represent a part of your life’s journey where you had to let go/surrender someone or something in order to grow. Start at the beginning of your life, and take your time with this exercise. You might want to make a list or journal about this before you gather your leaves. Give a name to each leaf, one for each of your surrendering experiences. Drop each leaf into a basket, calling out is name as you do so. Keep this basket with you during the fall months, or place it on your altar. Look at it often, and allow it to remind you how each of these “autumns” of your life required you to lose something in order to gain something new for your growth.

Re-Balancing and Letting Go

Seasons flow into each other in a circular and spiral way, and life is often a pattern of opposing forces constantly interacting with each other. It seems to me that the secret of the seasons is a sense of balance, which is what the season of autumn allows us to consider.

The seasons form a river of energy and life, which constantly repeats itself. Living in close relationship with the seasons and the flowing of time allows us to be attuned to the earth and teaches us to cooperate with the energies of the seasons, rather than fighting against them.

Recognize that your experience of each season is entirely different from that of anyone else. Some people may come alive in winter, rather than summer, and your experience of autumn may not happen during the customary days of autumn. Also keep in mind that the seasons are different, depending on whether you are living in the Southern or Northern hemisphere.

The season of autumn is a season of preparation and re-balancing, after the fiery energy of summer which is a time of being active, doing and expanding. We re-balance ourselves by slowing down, by reflecting, by letting go, by active waiting and surrender. These ways of being allow us to connect to the deepness of our sacred roots.

Society encourages us to be continually on the go, constantly busy, and presenting a happy face. But life is a cycle, and growth requires renewal. The season of autumn encourages us to renew ourselves. According to the ancient Celts, it is a time of endings and rest, a time of entering a place of stillness, a time of renewal and deepening. It is a time to draw your energy inward and limit your outer activity.

Can you consider giving yourself this gift of letting go and drawing inwards? What would this look in your life?

I have discovered that when I make time for stillness in my life, when I make time to embrace the wisdom of the darkness, even though it looks as though nothing is happening, it is in fact a time of birthing possibilities and opening myself up to magical potential. During autumn, the leaves fall to the earth and fertilize the ground for the next cycle of growth. Allowing this season to inform my way of being, I can allow myself time for both my body and soul to gather energy for the journey ahead.

The gifts of this season can be incredibly rich. Creativity depends on the times of inner stillness and restoration as much as the times of work.

How might your creative process be nourished by the simple act of allowing yourself more spaciousness in your life? What would you change in your life if you believed that your soul needed time to lie fallow, in the same way as the soil must lie fallow if it is to provide a rich harvest?

Autumn can be a time of inner retreat, a time to step back and look at your life with fresh eyes. Rather than seeking to learn more new things, treat it as a time to remember some of the things you may have forgotten. See it as a time to give loving attention to your Soul. Consider what this would look like in your life. It could be as small as giving yourself an hour a day to sit quietly, doing nothing, or creating a corner in your room that feels like a refuge. Acknowledge your hard work by giving yourself time to pause so your body and soul can catch up with you.

Autumn Outside My Window

I am the one wondering, “How does time fly so fast?”
I am the one who feels like I am still in the Summer of my womanhood.
I am the one who wonders “Is it Autumn outside my window, or is it Autumn in my mirror?”
I am the one who doesn’t want to let go but at the same time wants to give up resistance and gracefully transform.
My gifts to you have been the love of your life, the daughter of your dreams, and many memories, and life-lessons.
I want you to remember to have gratitude for all the gifts you have been given thus far and to remember that many more await you.

Council Suit
Ontario, Canada

I am the one who signals the beginning of autumn.
I am abundance -- the harvest, and the gathering of the fruits of our labours.
I give thanks for all of the good things we gather and store, to get us through the winter.
I am gratefulness.

Council Suit

I am the one who recycles the dry warmth of Summer into the damp, cool Autumn.
I am the one who flourishes in the coolness, who revels in the light of the Harvest Moon, who comes out to play when the temperature has cooled.
I am the one who calls you back to center, back to the turned wheel.
I am the one who begins anew, with the energy of all that has passed in the previous year behind me, fueling me, regenerated.

Lover of Fall
Committee Suit

I am One who Loves Fall!
I am the One who loves the multicolored leaves and golden glow of the light at certain times of the day and the smells of burning barrels and roasting marshmallows and the earthy smells of decomposing leaves into compost.
I am the one who loves the color as I walk through the woods and the comfy feel of flannel next to my skin.
I am the One who loves the hearty soups and stews of Fall and other Fall festive foods, like caramel apples and "mountain pies" baked on an open fire and roasting chicken with bread stuffing.
It's such a sensuous season.
I feel so alive in Fall, in spite of the sleepy darkness and death of winter it portends.
It's my "last" hurrah before the darkness descends and She carries me through to the new light of Winter Solstice.

Bounty and Joy
