Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Meet Hannah Homebody

It is in separating out all our parts
that we become whole.
~ Seena Frost

Of all the things that the founder of SoulCollage® said, this is my favorite. And the wisdom of it came home to me in a bright new way a few years ago when I met a new Neter for the first time.

Several times a year I lead SoulCollage® retreats and trainings, all of which involve multiple-night stays away from home. A few years ago I realized that, when the time came to leave home, I was reluctant to go. This was curious to me because, for years, I had traveled many times a year in the name of SoulCollage® as well as various vacations in Europe and the States. I had always loved the preparatory work leading up to the SoulCollage® retreats and trainings, not to mention the thrill of getting on an airplane and journeying to new vistas and experiences.

So why all of a sudden did I not want to go? It was curious to me, and I decided to explore with tenderness whatever was going on inside of me in relation to this new resistance. It occurred to me that there was a new part of me, a new Neter, that was wanting to be heard. So I sat still with my journal one morning and I listened.

And that is when I met Hannah Homebody!

I had wondered if all this reluctance/resistance was about stopping my work as a Facilitator/Trainer, but it turns out that that part of me was still deeply committed and rarin’ to go. The Teacher part of me was becoming increasingly frustrated by this other part of me, my Inner Homebody, the part of me who had no other agenda than to stay at home. What a revelation! As soon as I realized this, I listened more carefully to Hannah Homebody (and note: the card above was not made until after this inner work). She said:

I am the one who just wants more time at home. I am the one who enjoys the coziness of sitting on the sofa with Seymour in my lap. I am the one who feels more grounded when I am operating from my home base. I am the one who doesn’t want to be away from home as much as I used to.

After this new understanding, I realized that I needed to stop pushing my Inner Homebody away, embrace her, and find a way to meet her needs, along with meeting the needs of my Inner Teacher who was longing to continue leading overnight retreats and trainings. So I changed my teaching schedule a bit. I spread out the overnight events (when I could) so that they weren’t happening in multiple succession. When I did go away, I remained acutely aware of Hannah Homebody’s presence, and in my imagination I soothed her and reassured her and reminded her of the bigger reasons why we were leaving home for several days.

Which brings me back to my favorite Seena Quote:

It is in separating out all our parts
that we become whole.

I now see that because I spent some dedicated time to separating my Inner Homebody away from “the pack” for a little while, I was able to create a tangible and lasting wholeness within myself.

In 2005, she fell in love with SoulCollage® and was inspired to use her professional experience along with Internet technology as a means to serve the world by putting SoulCollage® "out there" in a really big way with KaleidoSoul. Anne Marie lives in eastern Massachusetts with her middle-aged husband, an elderly dog and two adolescent felines who keep them all young. Guest Columnist: Linda Woolfson

I’m Linda Woolfson, MA, PhD, SoulCollage® Trainer & Facilitator, writer, translator and creativity catalyst. Like many people in today’s world I have made my home in more than one country and love exploring the richness of what “home” really means.

There’s More to “Home” Than Real Estate

Most animals have an instinctual drive to build a burrow, nest, lair, or other place of secluded safety where they can raise their young. Before the 20th century most of us human animals lived our lives in a similar place which we called “home.” “Home” was as natural a center to most human lives as the heart to the body. And the “hearth,” where food was prepared and the family gathered to eat together, is just one letter different from “heart.”

Now, in the 21st century, with trains, planes and even rockets to travel in, and with global populations continuing to gravitate from the countryside into the cities, our relationship to this home of origin is shifting. Vast numbers of us in today’s world live far away from where we started out. My own trajectory is a good example of a 20th/21st century life. Born in South Africa of Russian/Jewish grandparents who went there to escape an Eastern European pogrom, I spent my childhood in South Africa and emigrated to the UK aged eleven. Since then I have also lived in France, the USA and Portugal. I currently lead a dual-based life between two of those countries, the UK and Portugal. Where, then is “home?” For me, as for many others today, this is a multi-faceted question.

Whether as adults we are able to re-visit our first home or not, a childhood home is likely to play an important role in our memory. Luckily perhaps, there are more ways of going “back there” than physically returning to a place: looking at photographs, sharing memories and eating the foods we ate in childhood can all be forms of “going home.” Even today, I am sometimes grabbed by a sudden craving for biltong, a form of South African dried beef, which can only be satisfied by ordering some from a supplier connected with the original home country – the British-produced substitutes get the spices all wrong!

There is more to home, then, than a place, and remembering home – homing – becomes a process as well as a location. I find that being consciously aware of homing as a process helps to ground me and re-affirm the experiences of home. The village where I live in Portugal is called Areia, and my Community card “Areia Rainbow” expresses this:

I am one who is always there when you go for your morning walk. My bright yellow flowers work on you like a post-it, reminding you to celebrate being home. At all seasons of the year, rain or shine, my branches say “Welcome! You are home – you’re in Areia!”

Once we start exploring home (and homing) as a process, the many different guises of home begin to reveal themselves. Whenever I draw my Giant River Otters, I am filled with the peace of home-coming:

I am one who delights in the pleasures of my family’s very own rock. Here, in the Lago de Sandeval, Peru, we are truly at home. In between finding a mate, getting food and shelter for our young ones and defending our territory, we find time to celebrate by slithering up here, basking in the sun and pushing each other playfully into the water. Here we are at our most creative – here at home.

This is my Second Chakra Companions card - the chakra of intuition, sensuality and creativity. I shall never forget the pure joy of seeing a family of otters for the first time through the binoculars while on holiday in Peru. They emanated the comfort and joy of knowing you’re free to take risks because you are unconditionally loved. As Maya Angelou says in All God’s Children Need Travelling Shoes, “The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” My Giant Otters remind me that home, a place of communion, is also the “place” of creativity. When we are in a state of dynamic flow we are also at home –perhaps when spending time with a trusted close friend, maybe in moments during meditation, or when engaged in a creative activity we love.

My own SoulCollage® practice helps me to see that home is a form of creative dialogue between self and world. This open-ended conversation helps me appreciate the many different forms “home” can take. My Gratitude card reconciles two of my “homes,” South Africa and the UK, through bearing witness to the beauty of both:

I am one who shows you how creativity brings together cherished places near and far away. I show you the true home of your imagination. Claim this treasure! Be grateful for your guides!

Unsurprisingly, there is a lovely thatched cottage in the corner!

Perhaps you too might enjoy spending some of your SoulCollage® time exploring what home is for you? Here are some suggestions:

  • Lay out all your cards, either on a table or on the floor. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and whisper to yourself the word “home.” Open your eyes. Now stroll with your eyes through your deck, noting any cards which resonate with your sense of home. Pull these cards out of your deck and spend some time with them.

  • Are there repeated symbols? How are the cards composed? What about their colours?

  • Having done this, if you sense a gap in your deck, create a “Home” card purely intuitively or using photos of homes past and present.

  • Having made a “Home” card, might there be another “Home” card waiting in the wings to be created? If so, how would this second card be different from the first one?

I wish you a poignantly joyful homing experience!
