Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Heroines in Your Community Suit

I had not really thought about including heroines in my Community Suit until another SoulCollager emailed me to suggest it. She told me that she personally celebrated a different female heroine every month because she was tired of how (in America) we get days off for important men in history but not women. I was struck by the ring of truth in these words, and believe that it's a topic worth diving into.

If you don't have any cards in your deck for real-life Heroines, perhaps it's time to consider adding some! defines the word “heroine” as a woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities. This definition, of course, is wide open to your own interpretation. I used to think that to be a heroine you'd have to save someone's life, or do something outstandingly brave in the face of physical danger, but now I am thinking differently.

You might know a woman in your life, or you might have read about her or seen her in a news story on TV or in a movie. This woman might have faced a difficult diagnosis with humor and a remarkable spirit. She might have given up a successful medical career to live a life feeding the hungry in Africa. Her life’s calling might be to nurse abused animals back to health.

Heroines in your SoulCollage® Deck might include well-known historical figures: women who took a stand, women who changed the course of history, women who stepped into a field (politics, medicine, law, the arts, etc.) where they made a difference.

I encourage you to start thinking about and collecting images for women who are your own personal heroines, so that you can create cards for them and add them to the rich Community layers of your own SoulCollage® Deck.

Here are just a few names of women who might qualify for this category:

Clara Barton * Mother Teresa * Amelia Earhart * Susan B. Anthony * Rosa Parks * Eleanor Roosevelt * Helen Keller * Beatrix Potter * Anne Frank * Hillary Clinton * Abigail Adams * Maya Angelou * Ellen DeGeneres * Dorothy Day * Elizabeth Cady Stanton * Christa McAuliffe * Georgia O'Keefe * Sandra Day O'Connor * Harriet Tubman * Margaret Mead * Gloria Steinem * Juliette Low * Rachel Carson

Time for Reflection

Go ahead and add some of your own heroines to this list. Think about women on your journey who have inspired you to greater creativity, wholeness, authenticity, and success, however you define success. These can be women still living or already passed on. When these women show up in your readings, they will have much wisdom, strength, and hope to add to your life.

Make a card for a real life or fictional heroine who has inspired you in some way.

Don't forget to do the basic journaling questions with this new Neter. Embrace her story and notice the meaning that her story has for you.

Check out this page for additional real life and fictional heroines to add to your list.

Guest Columnist: Catherine Anderson
My name is Catherine Anderson and I'm a SoulCollage® Facilitator and Trainer from Charlotte, NC. I am delighted to be adding my voice to Soul Songs and hope that my words inspire you to look more deeply into your deck of SoulCollage® cards.

You are the Hero(ine) of your Own Story

It is hard to see ourselves as the hero or heroine of our own story while we are in the midst of living it. We can admire those who have made great sacrifices or had great courage, but we often don’t believe we have that strength within ourselves.

But just think back on your grandparents or great-grandparents. Do you have stories about them that show how they overcame hardship or took courageous steps towards their destinies? My paternal grandmother is one of my heroines because, rather than accepting the status quo, she had the courage to make a difficult decision. In 1925, when she was 26 years old and living in a foreign country with a small child, she left a husband who was consistently unfaithful to her. This brave choice propelled her into a new life. In fact, if she had not done this, I wouldn’t be here today!

No one is a hero every day. Not even Superman! Heroes and heroines are not just those who do big things. Often it is the consistent decisions made day to day that turn our story into an adventure worth telling. And we may not see this until we look back on our lives and recognize the heroic effort it took to steer the direction of our narrative.

Look through your Committee Suit. How many of your SoulCollage® cards focus on the parts of yourself that you don’t like? Do you have many cards that recognize your positive traits? Have you recognized the hero(ine) within you?

What do you consider the important characteristics of a Hero or Heroine to be? Do you have a Heroine Archetype card in your Council suit – someone like Wonder Woman or Superman? Do you have a number of cards in your Community Suit for people who you consider to be Heroes or Heroines? The hero in my Community that I call upon most often when I need courage is Nelson Mandela.

What is it that all the Heroines and Heroes in your deck have in common? Mine all have the courage to act – the courage to take a risk, to do the uncomfortable thing, to go against the current of popular opinion, to fight for what they think is right, to put their own personal comfort aside for the greater good. And sometimes, the courage to simply put one foot in front of the other day-by-day.

Have you considered making a SoulCollage® card for the part of you that expresses the characteristics of your favorite Hero or Heroine? Because in truth all our lives contain elements of what Joseph Campbell called the Hero’s Journey. We are our own heroes every time we step out of our comfort zone and into unfamiliar territory to learn or do something new.

The Committee Neter that I often call on when I’m asked to step into new territory is my “Fearless One.” This Neter says to me: I am one who has the courage to dive into the unknown, trusting that I will be supported by the Universe. I am one who takes a leap of faith. I am one who flies against the wind.

Another card that I consider to be one of my most heroic cards is one I made after reading the dedication in a book by Lyndall Hare called In the Belly of the Beast which is about South African women’s lives of activism and exile. She talks about the apartheid struggle saying: “The struggle was fought on the backs of women. Those old women. The women who kept knitting and knitting, to keep that garment of community from pulling apart. Against all odds. Building day care centers out of cardboard boxes lined with garbage bags in Crossroads squatter camp … Making samosas at three in the morning to sell on the street corner, so that she can pay the bus fare to travel to where her son is being held in solitary confinement. Spreading an old age pension of $20 a month to feed seven children and nine grandchildren …” This card “Steps of Courage” is a constant reminder that doing what I can with what is right in front of me, rather than sinking into helplessness, is heroic action.

I encourage you to make a card to represent the hero/heroine within you, even if you haven’t yet recognized him or her yet. You can then call upon him/her for support when you have to take courageous action. If he/she has been dormant in your life, he/she might be delighted that you have at last discovered that he/she is still alive!

IIf you find this hard to do, see if you are able to make a hero or heroine card for one of your ancestors. Remember that part of them still lives inside of you and make a card for this inherited part of yourself.

We have only to follow the thread of the hero path. Where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outwards, we shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.

As promised, we are featuring SoulCollage® cards from our readers in each issue.

Each card below is a card from one SoulCollager's Deck that represents the Hero/Heroine.

Barbara Jordan
Community Suit

I am one who was a powerful orator for justice and civil rights for minorities and women. I said things many others thought but were afraid to say. I spoke my mind and heart, often turning phrases in my poet's soul. I was a Texas Democrat whose voice would be so welcome now long after I silenced myself and ended my life in a way that demonstrated I was in control of my destiny. I battled illness and oppression and homophobia, hiding my love for women so we could live in quiet peace in the closet, but on our own terms. I am one who urges everyone to speak the truth with passion, compassion, and fearless determination to make a positive difference.

Heroine- Thriving
Council Suit

I am the one who reminds you to connect to your creative center to survive and thrive. Nourish the conditions of your inner landscape because this determines your outer physical world. Look at all that is around you and then really feel what is inside you; from this space you can create magic in harsh conditions and thrive. Nourish what you have. You need nothing more.

The Seeker
Suit Unknown
New York

I am the one who is curious. I am the one who seeks to understand. I am the one who sometimes misses the call to adventure that is right next to me. I am the one who is standing at the threshold of saying yes to the call that will lead me to discover that I am the heroine of my own story. I am the one being invited to turn around and follow my guide, Leopard, who will guide me and protect me as I journey into the unknown.

Captain Sully
Community Suit

I am one who followed my intuition and years of experience to perform what people called "the Miracle on the Hudson." The control tower told us we couldn't be successful doing what we did-- but I knew it was the best option for a very difficult situation. No one was hurt; no lives were lost. Miracles can happen when cool heads prevail and lifelong skills are brought to bear against seemingly impossible odds.

Suit Unknown

I am one who rises above any situation. I am protected by my outer shield and the prayers of others. My words are my sword. My horse is my power. My flag is my vision. I am prepared to vanish all obstacles and achieve my goals.

Pirate Girl
Committee Suit

Remember you have pirate energy inside for your journey. I want you to know this is a good kind of fierceness. I am passionate and in touch with myself. I will not be dissuaded. Bring me into your life. Don’t waste time. Choose your priorities and fiercely protect and advance them. I can strengthen you. I can help you sort and shed.

Wonder Woman
Community Suit

I am the one who feels the weight of her responsibilities. I am the one who must know how to be both herself and all the others. I am the one who dreams of freedom but must first be strong and support her family. My gift for you is to take the time to be yourself.

Suit Unknown
Montreal, Canada

I am one who flexes her muscles, with a smile on my face. I may be a small girl in pigtails, but I have Athena’s aegis on my chest, a medallion from Medusa’s head to protect me. I gift you with Benevolence, Abundance, Love, Courage and Strength.

Say whaaaaaat? A PARTY for our inner critics? Maybe you’re thinking “Hmmm… Anne Marie has officially gone off the deep end now!”

But, no… I’m serious! It’s time to really listen to our inner critics’ messages and figure out how they are trying to help us (and they really, really are trying to help us). Only in this way can we lessen the sometimes frightfully negative hold they have on our lives.

For four hours we’ll gather together via an easy-to-click-and-access Zoom video conference link where we can actually see each other. (You can also call in via phone).

Anne Marie will lead the first 90 minutes of our time together with teaching and a guided imagery “Magical Inner Journey” to help us see our Inner Critics in a different light.

Then we’ll break so everyone can be on their own for one hour to make cards.

Finally, we’ll gather together for the last 90 minutes for some insight-full journaling, lots of sharing of our cards, and a closing circle to send us back out of the retreat and into our lives, freed up from the tenacious hold of our inner critical voices.

Saturday February 10, 2018
12 noon – 4 pm Eastern

If you can’t attend in person, we’ll send you the video recording along with all handouts.
