Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Give (Inner) Peace a Chance

All we are saying...
is give peace a chance.
~ John Lennon, 1969

I recently heard this song as background music on a television show, and something inside of me seemed to sit up and take notice. When John Lennon wrote this in 1969, he was writing and singing about world peace. The song quickly became the anthem of the anti-war and counterculture movements, and was sung by half a million demonstrators in Washington D.C. at the Vietnam Moratorium Day, on November 15 that same year, led by Pete Seeger. You can listen to an original recording of John Lennon singing it here.

The other day, when I heard this song again for the first time in many years, I was struck by something else. First of all, the chorus kept running through my mind and I found myself humming it for what seemed like days on end. You know what it’s like to get a certain lyric stuck in your head? When that happens to me, I know that some deeper message in the words is trying to get through. So I pondered and I journaled.

Yes, at this crucial point in history, the world surely needs to give peace a chance. But what about inner peace? What about giving time and energy to calming and assuring all the stressed-out, anxious, fearful inner parts of my Self? What about giving inner peace a chance?

Deep and abiding inner peace is what allows me to create the life I’m longing for. This means making peace with all of my inner parts, even the annoying, pesky ones. It means making peace with my physical body, all of my life experiences, even making peace with death. Making peace with my relationships. Making peace with my past mistakes and disappointments.

In SoulCollage®, we call all these inner parts “The Committee” and you can read more about them here. Sometimes it does require taking a chance, taking a leap of faith, or at least a tiny step, towards making peace with them. We might not see how a troubled, challenging inner part of us could ever be at peace. The shadowed parts are the most difficult to make peace with, in my experience. But we do it one tiny step at a time, trusting the process every inch of the path, however long it may appear to be.

One day a few months ago, as I was lying quietly in Savasana pose at the end of yoga class, I felt totally at peace and harmony with myself. The teacher was quietly and lovingly covering each person with a soft green blanket. Candlelight flickered in the darkened room. I could hear my breath and my heartbeat, one and the same. Suddenly an image came to mind- surrounding me on the floor (instead of the 15 other Yogis) were all of my many inner Committee parts. And each one was relaxing and mellowing into the peacefulness that surrounded me and floated within me. I make that a practice now, when I’m meditating or in yoga class. I imagine all of my inner parts have come together, with me at the helm, to experience the deep peace that comes with self-compassion and complete acceptance.

Synchronistically, two books recently crossed my path that speak to creating peace in our inner worlds among our inner casts of characters. If you struggle with making peace with any of your own inner Committee parts, these might be helpful:

Negotiating the Inner Peace Treaty, by Chelsea Wakefield. Becoming the Person You Were Born to Be. A real gift to anyone interested in finding out more about the many selves that make up our Inner Cast of Characters. Clear, thoughtful, and lyrical, it guides the reader along the fascinating journey of self-discovery, providing support and practical suggestions along the way.

No Enemies Within, by Dawna Markova. A Creative Process for Discovering What's Right About What's Wrong. A helpful, compassionate book that helps put some perspective on those inner parts of us that give us the most trouble. This is available only from second party sellers now but it is well worth getting a good used copy.

Being Peace

In this world, it can be hard to know Peace.

Anxiety, worry, and convergence of complex energies can crowd out peace.

We are so often called to cultivate peace, bring peace, find peace, but creative process asks us how are we invited and inspired to BE Peace.

The path of peace holds the energies of harmony, connection, freedom and love. The absence of these four elements often cause anxiety, conflict, disruption and isolation.

Each of us has the opportunity to create peace, impacting the lives of those we touch, and feeling the influence of those lives that touch us. Seeking peace is a powerful way to activate healing in a tumultuous world.
The Peace of Wild Things

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.
I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

- Wendell Berry
Using the poem to inspire your own creative process… how can you discover your deep nature within to be free, and to be peace?

To be peace is to acknowledge the center where equilibrium is held. Being peace is connected to the nature within - a space where balance is active and while many things can move in, out and around, they will not disrupt the center. Being peace is an act of trust in the capacity of the human spirit.

Create with these narrative prompts to tell a new story about being:

I am Peace…

I am the Center…

I wake…

I go…

I come to…

I rest in…

Creative expression, through artmaking, dialogue and story, will transform our experiences. Where there are disruptions, distinct and separate parts of self can be discovered and integrated into a new whole, bringing peace to what was broken or broken open, if we are willing to trust and be peace, even in the storm of the story.

The call to seek and find peace within the creative is vital and dynamic, requiring curiosity, courage, commitment and trust. When seeking peace, we must also be willing to hold and share the many ways we are undone, out of balance or harboring pain. When tumultuous experiences spin around and stir emotion, there is an opportunity to turn to art to seek deeper understanding and find peace.

When you have exposed the truth in your art, when you have poured out your pain and discovered a needed piece of your story, then you are free in that moment to BE PEACE.

If Peace is a Bridge over troubled waters, notice if you are seeking peace, making peace or Being peace. Peace comes from traveling the path, finding the truth, releasing the trigger, exposing the conflict, unraveling a worry, and uncovering other sources of dis-ease. Not to banish or destroy, but to invite each of these experiences to become a bridge from there to here - so that each can be known and be seen… which brings peace.

A special place can bring peace. A place of peace offers solace and sanctuary from disruption. Like Henry Thoreau at Walden Pond, a sacred place will calm the tumult of “too much” and is often discovered in the outer wild, where nature restores balance and contemplative time can soothe the soul. Within our art we also discover places of peace, inner landscapes that provide us peace.

We are called to seek it, search for it, carve it out and cultivate it, like never before. When peace is not easily found in the world, we yearn for it. The tenderness of life and the importance of peace for the human spirit is undeniable. Being able to slow down, to pause, to get quiet, to create space, to witness, to find center, to restore balance and to breathe deeply... these are all ways peace can be discovered and recovered.

Turning to creative expression through SoulCollage®, and other forms of art as process, is a vital way to explore what peace means to you, what peace brings to you. Holidays can be difficult. Explore where creative ritual and traditions that are important can restore and cultivate peace.

I created the fre*e seasonal journey Twelve Nights of Solstice to bring peace to the conversation and restore the deeper meaning of Solstice in the busy season where we sometimes tend to get a bit lost. You are invited discover your path of peace starting December 9th, with guided meditations, creative prompts and more - please register here.
