Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Three Bright Ancestors

My oldest brother Joe has always been the historian in our family, the "keeper of the family history." I have never been interested in family trees or who begat whom much beyond my grandparents on either side. I understand the need to know, to define, to understand one's origins. It's just that the details never really called to me or drew me in. Because of this, I've felt somewhat disconnected from my "family heritage" so to speak.

And then I made this SoulCollage® card (ah, isn't that the way all good stories begin?!).

At first, this card seemed to be about the woman on the left. Whenever I drew it, she spoke to me about body image and distress/shame over the disfigurement of my left breast from cancer and a mastectomy.

But then a few years ago, I found myself face to face with this card during a daily reading, and the stone figures on the right dominated the energy of the card in a way that I could not ignore. I couldn't get them to "talk" to me right away, so I wrote a detailed description of the card to get the imaginative juices flowing. There is a nude woman in this card, standing behind what looks like shattered glass. On the right side of the card are 3 stone figures. They are not looking at the woman. They are looking beyond her. They are bathed in light of different colors- golden brown, bluish green, and yellowish green.

After this, the words flowed more easily and this is what they said to me:

We are here to represent 3 of the Bright Ancestors who are watching over you at all times. We know that you feel like your body is disfigured. We know that you don't like how your body looks when you see yourself in the mirror. But we are looking beyond that. We are looking past it, over it, beyond it... to something bigger. We can see the Bigger Picture. We see Spirit. Spirit is the Big Picture. Spirit holds the Mirror.

We invite you today to stop looking down. To look up at your beautiful self in the Mirror, to nod affirmation of your beauty, and then to look up and Beyond as we are doing. We invite you to do this because seeing the Big Picture changes everything. Seeing the Big Picture changes how you see yourself, and how you see and respond to Life. We know that you are a loving, giving, creative, joyful being of Spirit. We know you. You are of us. You are known and loved exactly as you are. Can you take comfort in that? Can you allow this knowledge to give you courage to look at yourself in the mirror and name yourself as Beautiful?

Well, as you can imagine, I was blown away by this reading. For someone who never paid much attention to my ancestors, I sure was feeling connected to them now!

So my suggestion to you, dear reader is this: even if you have never been concerned with your ancestors or couldn't care less about your place in the Family Tree, take a look through your SoulCollage® Deck, or through the stacks of images you are collecting. Are there any that might be whispering to you of love and ancestry? Pay attention as you allow these images to speak to you. Because you ARE connected to those who have gone before you, in deep and intimate ways. And SoulCollage® is the perfect medium for your ancestors to reach out and touch you, now, in this moment.

Anne Marie Bennett is a writer, self-taught artist, website goddess, cancer survivor, and SoulCollage® Facilitator / Trainer who was mentored directly by Seena Frost. In 2005, she fell in love with SoulCollage® and was inspired to use her professional experience along with Internet technology as a means to serve the world by putting SoulCollage® "out there" in a really big way with KaleidoSoul. Anne Marie lives in eastern Massachusetts with her middle-aged husband, an elderly dog and two adolescent felines who keep them all young. You can read more about how SoulCollage® assisted her on her cancer journey on her website SOS Cancer Journeys. Anne Marie's newest book, Through the Eyes of SoulCollage® is now available.

Unlock Meaning from Your Cards
with Mind Mapping

60 minute SoulCollage® video class
with SoulCollage® Facilitator
Gayle Bodine in Colorado

Our Next Monthly
SoulCollage® Class
is a VIDEO Call

In this class, SoulCollage® Facilitator and Art Therapist Gayle Bodine will teach you to use Mind Maps to uncover deeper layers of meaning in your cards.

Gayle uses the mind map as a bridge between the right brained intuitive process of creating a SoulCollage® card and the more left brained linear process of writing about your cards. She views the mind map as a way to gather descriptive associations to you cards while remaining in an intuitive, non-linear modality. In this way greater understanding can be gathered. Gayle also uses this process to gain insight from her drawings and paintings.

Gayle is an artist, Art Therapist, college professor, drawing teacher and SoulCollage® Facilitator who lives in Denver, Colorado.

Guest Columnist: Audrey Chowdhury
My name is Audrey Chowdhury and I'm a SoulCollage® Facilitator from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. I am pleased to be sharing my wisdom about the Ancestors with the Soul Songs audience, and hope that my words inspire you to look more deeply into your own ancestral lineage.

Accessing the Ancestors

Have you ever felt as if your life were following a script that someone else wrote? What if the choices that you have made and the beliefs that you hold have been in service to someone else's past?

The life that you have created is a tapestry woven from the threads of a myriad of influences. Many, if not most, of these threads were produced by the people that came before you: your ancestral lineage. You may have many questions about how you have become the way you are. Your ancestors are a tremendous resource for you, and they are just waiting for you to ask them for guidance and information about who and where you came from.

I have been facilitating SoulCollage® workshops, and training Facilitators in this process for several years. One of the things that has surprised and delighted me is the way that the ancestors love to show up in the SoulCollage® cards that participants create. Most often, they are not expected, or even invited, but they appear with astonishing regularity. These ancestors love to pop up in the least obvious ways For example, one woman created a collaged card with an image of a loon, not sure why she did this. When she spoke from the point of view of the card, she realized that this was her grandfather's favorite bird, and he had chosen to speak to her through this image. It could happen with an image of a dog, or a house, or a landscape. The image triggers a memory, and the memory becomes an opening for the ancestor to appear to us, and talk to us.

Why does SoulCollage® work so well as a vehicle for the ancestors? I believe it is because this intuitive art process is driven by images and imagination. We try not to think while we are making these collages, but rather we allow the images that have attracted us to arrange themselves on a card in a way that evokes emotions and power within us. This type of work opens us to hearing the voices of our ancestors because we consciously attempt to hear the voice of the image through a process called “active imagination,” a concept described by psychiatrist Carl Jung. Art therapy employs this concept in working with images as well. It is simply the idea that one can embody and become the object or image that one is perceiving. We can do this with images that remind us of our ancestors, and of course with an actual photo of them as well.

When you create a card that evokes the presence of an ancestor, known or unknown, you have a wonderful opportunity to ask questions that can help you to understand yourself and your lineage on many levels. The messages that come from dialoguing with SoulCollage® cards of your ancestors do not originate from your conscious mind's point of view. The goal of asking questions of your ancestors through the cards is to understand them and their experience on an emotional and spiritual level. Why? Because knowing what it was like to be your ancestors can help you to understand who you are and how you got this way.

Your ancestors were survivors. You know this because you are here now, living, breathing and reading this page. Just being conscious of this tells you that they had strengths, hopes, and dreams that sustained them, kept them alive and perhaps even enabled them to thrive. Their strengths also live within you and can help you navigate the difficult times in your own life. Working with the ancestors can help you identify and own the special gifts and visions that you have inherited.

When I facilitate workshops in which we create cards evoking our ancestors, I ask participants to spend some time with their journals as they consider the following questions:
  • What unknown forces have brought me to this place in my life?
  • What mysteries lie in my ancestral lineage and how are they affecting me?
  • What are the beliefs, patterns, illnesses, and family stories that are playing out in my life and how are they affecting me?
  • How can I change or possibly benefit from the way these patterns affect me?
  • Who are the ancestors that wish to help me through their guidance, healing, or courage? How can I access their wisdom?
  • Were there secrets, fears, or superstitions in your family that were passed on as “common sense?”
  • Which inherited beliefs, strengths, illnesses, and family secrets do you carry into your daily life?
  • Which ones do you try to keep buried?
  • What about their coping strategies and survival skills: do you recognize these in yourself or have you forgotten them?
These are very large questions that could bring up many memories, stories, and teachings. Which of these questions attracts you in this moment? If you have any SoulCollage® cards in your deck that reflect one or more of your ancestors, try creating a list of specific questions for them based on your own curiosity. Maybe the ancestor(s) can help you to gain some answers to the broader puzzles that face you in the present day. After all, they lived through some turbulent times and experiences themselves and they would love to be a resource for you.

Discover Your Divine Financial Life Purpose with SoulCollage® and Sacred Money Archetypes

with Minette Riordan, Ph.D.
SoulCollage® Facilitator since 2012

The 12-Week Journey Begins November 5, 2017

What stops many women from living their financial life purpose isn't motivation, spirit or drive, it's their relationship with money.

Because money is at the center of every decision you make in your life, your business or your career.

Can you relate to any of these common situations?
  • You work hard, but your income isn't growing. It's like you're trading in your health and well-being taking care of everyone else (even to the point of getting resentful and exhausted).
  • You keep thinking that “money shouldn't matter” – but you end up paying a lot of attention to getting your bills paid and just plain worrying about money.
  • You're earning well, but savings? ... not so much. Spending makes you feel good, but your bank account isn't happy.
  • Or, you find no matter how much you've earned and saved, you don't trust money will be there for you when you need it.
  • When it comes to money conversations with family, clients, the bank, or whoever, you often feel uncomfortable, tension, or avoidance – rather than confidence, ease, and empowerment.
If you're fed up and you're ready to end inner conflict and stress around money, then this all-new online series is for you!

Join Minette for Creative Money Mastery™ - an artful 90-day program that shows you how to effortlessly increase your confidence, your clarity and your cash flow.

While your relationship with money is as unique as you are, there are Archetypal patterns or themes that possess a universal quality. Which means it is critical that you discover your money strengths and gifts, along with your money shadow-side, so you stop wasting your time and energy trying to fit yourself into a box of what you think you “should” do money-wise, and instead empower yourself with money, so that you can finally live your divine life purpose.

This workshop offers a feminine, sacred path to transforming your relationship to money through art, journaling, visualization and sacred sharing.

In your Members Only Audio Library, there's a great audio class from Minette that's yours to listen to as part of your membership: Healing Your Relationship with Money.  Listen in, and you can see what a wise and patient teacher Minette is.

Each card below is a card from one SoulCollager's Deck that represents their Ancestors.

Winds of Time
Suit Unknown

I am one who looks to the women in my line for wisdom and guidance. I am one who is aware that all the line of ancestors are not blood relatives. I am one who knows that the women are not moved by the vagaries of the wind.

Many Came Before,
Many Come After
Community Suit

I am one who is here now because of the thousands of ancestors that came before. I am here now but will be gone when others who were born of me or were touched by me carry on. My life is the narrow passage in the middle of the hourglass. We are all connected.

Sally Hastings
Community Suit
North Carolina

I am your kindred spirit Sally Anderson Hastings. I was an intrepid woman who went with my brother in a covered wagon across the Allegheny Mountains in 1800 and wrote about it. I was known as a "grass widow" because my husband left me and my two children to fend for ourselves. I was a passionate poet who published a book of my poems and musings about my "Family Tour to the West."

My Scottish Grandmother
Community Suit

I am the one who connects you to your Scottish roots. I am the one who taught you about clans and tartans and bagpipe music. I am the one who showed you how to be resilient and start anew while honoring the deep pull of history.

Roots of Ancestry

I am one who has roots in Russia, in Kiev, where the matryoshka dolls flourish and remind me of the layers of ancestry. If you turn me upside down, I will show you the strong roots of my background, of my grandfather's journey. I am one who honors my ancestors.

Pioneer Madonna
Community Suit

I am the one who endures suffering for my beliefs. I am strong and survive great hardships for my family. I can do much with little, and teach my children that God will provide. Most of the time that has been so. I pass on to you faith, grit, and drive. I am your great, great, great grandmother, and I am the Madonna of the prairie.

The Traveler
Community Suit

I am one who travels my continuing journey leaving these bones behind. I am your soul's historian. I know your history, the history of our ancestors, and our ancestors' ancestors. I am the riches and the history of many lifetimes. My essence is forever...far beyond these dry bones and adornments of gold.

Life Wheel
Community Suit

I am one who is grateful for having had loving parents. They gave life to me , my little sister and little brother.

Council Suit

I am one who is part of something bigger than just myself, I am one who is connected to my past and my family's past. I am one who feels the stickiness of family history.

Community Suit
North Carolina

I am the one who is full of stories from long ago. I am the one who had a long and varied life. I am the one who left behind mementos and clues. I am the one who invites you to listen in.

Looking at My Ancestors
Committee Suit

I am the one who mourns the hurts my family of origin. I am the one who grieves the damage done. And I firmly resolve to be part of the process of making it better for future generations.

Becoming Me
Community Suit

I am the one who left the comforts of my home to make a better life for myself and my family. I am the one who often “wore a disguise” in order to prevent frustration in my new land. I am the one who worked jobs that made me proud, though I was looked on as a pauper because of it. I am the one who always missed my homeland, but was proud of the person I became here.

Council Suit

We are the Ones who came before you. We are reflected inside in each unique reiteration-- family karma, culture, and humanity. We are the ones who pass down hopes and dreams, fears and trauma. We are the ones who watch from afar with interest as you make your own way.

Community Suit

I am one who comes down through the ages. I pass on the family legacy, the past, the shared joy, tenderness and complicity, laughter and tears. I am the roots of your tree. I am the one who breathes life, which belongs to the past but remains in parts and traces of you.
