Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® Facilitator in Massachusetts and worldwide online. This column is all about presenting ways to get your soul singing with the deep, wide, wonder-full process that is SoulCollage®.

Peaceful Warrior Rides Again

At a SoulCollage® gathering several years ago, I found myself in a discussion about the current political situation in the United States. The topic of archetypes came up and someone referred to the battle between the two (then) current presidential candidates as a contest between a Warrior and a Peacemaker.

Since SoulCollage® does not play favorites when it comes to politics or religion, I won't go into which presidential candidate was being governed by which archetype. I only mention it here as a reminder that everyone around us (well-known or otherwise) is influenced by ancient archetypes.

I also mention it because it reminded me that in my own personal Council of archetypes, I don't have a Warrior or a Peacemaker. Instead, I have a Peaceful Warrior.

She came to me very early in my own SoulCollage® journey. I made the card intuitively, and when I initially journaled with this Neter, I was surprised to hear her telling me that she is my Peaceful Warrior. I hadn't been consciously aware of her before, but listening to her and looking back on my life I can see the kernel of truth that she shares with me. I have never been one to valiantly charge in to save the day, or rescue someone with clanging symbols and loud bellows. My Warrior's way is softer, gentler, and more low-key. Her intention is to handle conflict peacefully.

Several months after meeting my Peaceful Warrior Neter, I was in a difficult situation where I worked. There had been a huge misunderstanding over something I had said about my boss, and I found myself being reprimanded unfairly by her boss. In the midst of my anger, I did a SoulCollage® reading for guidance, and Peaceful Warrior is one of the two cards that I randomly drew.

I did some journaling with her, and she told me that I could rely on her energy and strength to deal with this situation. She gave me the idea to talk this out in a reasonable and peaceful manner with David, my boss's boss. I realized that I could stand up for myself in a real and visible way while utilizing this Peaceful Warrior energy to calm the rough waters. I actually propped the card up on my desk beside the phone when I called David the next day. This Neter's strong yet peaceful energy enabled me to stand my ground in a way that wasn't hurtful to anyone, while expressing myself in a way that allowed each of us to be heard and understood.

It was a powerful experience that I will never forget. Not just the phone call itself, but the fact that I went to my deck with a real need, and received an immediate, practical, wise answer.

Time for Reflection

Take some time this week to think about the archetypes of Warrior, Peacemaker, and Peaceful Warrior in your own world. How do these themes play out in people and places that you know? Do you relate more strongly to one or another? What are the bright and shadowed sides of each of these archetypes? If you resonate with one of these archetypes more strongly than another, look for images that you can relate to and create a card for it for your own deck.

Retreating to Peace

The word retreat is an interesting one. It can refer to drawing back from a battle, which is a form of pursuing peace. As a verb, it can mean to withdraw to a quiet or secluded place, perhaps seeking peace. As a noun, it may refer to a quiet place where one can restore one's inner peace. Or it can refer to a period of seclusion for a specific purpose, perhaps at an organized event. In so many ways, retreat is a tool for peace within and without.

Many of us have attended a retreat for one or more days. We know that healing and rejuvenation can come from such a sacred "time out" in a place that is different from our everyday surroundings. We could say that we retreat to a retreat. As a SoulCollage® retreat leader, I treasure the magic that happens when time and peaceful space are available to focus on inner explorations. But right now, in the time of COVID -19, we're necessarily taking a pause from in-person retreats.

So, how might we retreat while we are involuntarily sequestered? Of course, our SoulCollage® practice offers many opportunities. As we explore and consult our cards, we can engage our Neters in calming and peaceful pursuits. They can create paths for inner peace, both actively and ritually. I've developed a tool, called an Inner Retreat Card, to help me get the most from my Neters and to support my pursuits of inner peace.

Why have an Inner Retreat Card? Ideally, each of our parts, or Neters, is in balance itself and with its cohort of Neters. We are at peace within, with all parts in tune and in harmony. But in reality, we usually have inner or outer energies that are conflicting or otherwise hindering us. Maybe they are overwhelming us with too high a dose, or maybe they're painfully absent. With an Inner Retreat Card, we can provide a "time out" for specific aspects of ourselves, our archetypes, our community or even our spirit helpers represented by our SoulCollage® cards. The Inner Retreat card provides a tangible and energetic safe haven to hold any cards from any of the four suits, for as long as you wish.

My Inner Retreat Card includes a beach and calm, welcoming waters. It provides sun or shade for one or more beings to settle in comfortably. It is quiet and offers an expansive view for contemplation. The temperature is perfect and there is a cool, gentle breeze. This is a place where any of my Neters will feel nourished and protected. I often place a card face-to face with it, and then set them in a special place. If a Neter is annoying me, or getting in my way, I may put it in retreat.

Sometimes, a card may simply need rejuvenation, or some distance as I prepare to learn more about it. Other times, I place multiple cards in retreat to help them find balance or develop a collaborative relationship. At first, I kept my Inner Retreat Card as a tool to use with my SoulCollage® deck. Now, it has settled into my Community Suit, representing my capacity to manage my inner workings.

Right now, my Inner Retreat card is hosting two Neters. They are stacked together and tied with a ribbon, on a sacred altar. My intention is for some futility to be resolved, and for some understanding to evolve between the two cards shown here. One is my Committee card: Impatience/Intolerance. The other is a new Community card that represents the "Deniers and Defiers" of the serious and disruptive pandemic we are experiencing. After they have spent several days together, and I feel that the tension has lessened, I will ask the two cards to dialogue. That simply can't happen right now because they are too "charged." That's why they are in the retreat space, which affords some energetic transformation.

Perhaps you'd like to create and use an Inner Retreat Card:

1. Your Inner Retreat Card will be made as you would any SoulCollage® card, using a blank card the size of those in your deck. You may want to do a meditation or journey to envision the aspects of your inner retreat space. Is it outdoors or indoors? Spacious or cozy? Perhaps it is a fantasy place or somewhere out of this world. This is your place to serve your Neters. Take the time to find the right image(s) to represent your vision of this space.

2. Your Inner Retreat Card may be paired with one or more of your cards, perhaps stacked together on a stand, wrapped in fabric, tied together with ribbon - whatever provides the ritual and energetic, subconscious exchanges that are helpful for you. You may want to set aside a special place or altar where you use your Inner Retreat card.

3. Place one of your new or mystery cards with your Inner Retreat Card for a day or more with the intention that it will find peace and clarity. Ask it to introduce itself and ask about its wisdom after it has been in retreat.

4. Choose two cards that might benefit from some peaceful time together. Ask them each to tell you their opinion of the other. Place them in retreat together for at least a day. When they return, ask them each to tell you what they admire about the other.

5. Your Inner Retreat Card may be kept as a tool, or it may find its way into one of your suits as your capacity to internally manage and heal your Neters. It's up to you!

I hope you will gain insight and wisdom from having an Inner Retreat Card available in your SoulCollage® practice.

I am calm, centered and nonviolent toward all my fellow beings.

Peaceful in Time
Committee Suit

I Am One Who hears the clock ticking down
As the time of this life swiftly moves forward.

I Am One Who is at peace
With the transformations,
Past, present, and future.

I Am One Who is reborn
With every breath,
Every prayer, and every awakening.

Council Suit

I am one who invites you into the still places of peace and serenity.
I am the one who is infinitely patient.
I will guide you on the quiet path.
I await you in the green places of the spiritual garden.
The peace you seek is within you. I want you to stay on your path (of meditation), and be compassionate with yourself when you stray from it.
Know that I await and welcome you knowing that you will be back.

Peace Amid the Storm
Suit Unknown

This card was created to illustrate one of my favorite quotes:
Serenity is not freedom from the storm; but peace amid the storm.

Committee Suit

I am one who is calmed by the sounds of nature.
I close my eyes and feels serene – at one with the universe.
The candles bring light and warmth to my soul.
The bird, a cardinal, is a visit from my recently departed mother and fills me with the knowledge that she is now at peace.
And that allows ME to be at peace with the world.

Harbinger of Peace
Committee Suit

I am one who endeavors to bring forth light in self and others.
I am gently nudging you to look within.
Peace is not found outside of you but within.
I want you to rest in the arms of the Divine, nourish your own sense of inner peace, bring your light to the world in service.
Your light will help others find theirs - be the peace you long to see in the world.

Council Suit

I bring the gift of meditation.
I bring you the ability to listen to your inner voice.
The amethyst is your birthstone; the coral is the sea that fills your soul.
I give you a mirror to see the beauty within yourself.
I bring you peace and tranquility.

Yearning for Peace
Suit Unknown

I am one who balances atop the scissors’ points which are balancing upon the rock’s strong base.
I am one who knows my very being is as precarious as this fragile piece of paper folded carefully into a flying crane symbolizing peace.
I am one who wishes my existence were as solid as the rock on which we balance.
I am one who yearns for peace to be reality.
May it soon be so!
