Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

The Turning of the Seasons

When I was growing up, there was an old dogwood tree in our back yard. Its branches were so long that they bent low to the ground, and in spring and summer, the boughs of soft pink and white made a wide curtain around the tree. I would spend hours inside that sheltered space on good-weather days with my journal, or just dreaming or reading away a lazy afternoon.

I had a special fondness for that tree, can still feel the sturdy roughness of its bark against my back as I leaned there during those quiet hours years and years (and years!) ago. I can still sense the living spirit of that dogwood tree as it stood strong and steady beside me every time I sat beneath it.

There have been other trees I have loved across the span of my life. One of them was a solitary tree that stood near the parking lot outside my college dorm in the mid-70’s. That one gave me a much-needed feeling of solitude, as well as a splendid view of West Rock (New Haven CT) and sunsets. A current one is near the ocean here in Beverly and it also gives me the shelter of solitude plus the pleasure of being in close proximity to the ocean.

A few weeks ago, during one of our monthly KaleidoSoul tele-classes, Heather Conn, a facilitator in Vancouver, led us on a lovely guided imagery journey where we were to visualize a symbol of nature that was special to us. In my mind’s eye, it was an easy journey right to that dogwood tree. What a joyful moment! I stood next to it, wrapped my arms around its roughened bark and kissed one of the newly budding flowers.

Then we were guided to BECOME this symbol, to look out at the world and ourselves with ITS eyes and ears. So in my imagination, I became this beautiful old dogwood tree. I was standing straight and tall, my arms/boughs lifted to the heavens. I looked out over the other houses, the other trees, the gardens, the newly green grass. I looked at the beautiful woman (me!) sitting beneath my branches. It was springtime all around me in this imagery, maybe because it springtime was just starting to bloom in eastern Massachusetts at that time, in "real" time.

When guided to ask the tree what wisdom it had for me in this moment, it said to me, I am the one who is opening to the newness of spring. I am the one who has just come through a dark, cold winter and is now raising my head to the liquid warmth of the sun. I am the one who feels the greening running through my veins, and new life bursting from my branches. The wisdom I give you now is that this is how the seasons turn, over and over again. You will go through dark cold seasons of winter, but always, always, the new season of spring will return and you will know sunlight and warmth again.

I felt so connected to this tree! And I have taken its wisdom about the turning of the seasons with me. Always there will be dark, cold winters… and always, always, there will be the greening newness of spring. This is the wisdom of Mother Earth. This is the wisdom of the seasons.

Season of Awakening & Growth

Spring is a time of re-emergence into the world after a time of inner reflection and incubation during the winter days. It is a time when new life and fresh color appears in our gardens, when the earth becomes warm again and the hours of light begin to outnumber the hours of darkness. Spring is a time of sowing new seeds, of expansion and of letting go of the layers that we have needed to keep us warm during the winter season. It is, in essence, a time of Awakening and a time of bringing in fresh energy and vitality.

This is a good time to ask your SoulCollage® cards "What is awakening within me?" or "What can I do to bloom and blossom into my authentic life?" Is there a particular dream that you have for this season of your life? Is there a new practice you want to bring into your life? Spring feels like a perfect time for starting something fresh and new, aligning with the new growth sprouting up from the earth.

My personal awakening as the days grow longer is that I want to be kind to myself. I want to treat myself as I would a dear friend, I want to be an anam cara (soul friend) to myself. I want to make ways and introduce practices in my life that will allow me to bud and blossom.

According to Evelyn Underhill, Awakening is the first stage on the mystical path, and occurs when we begin to have an absolute knowing of our connection to the Divine.

My "Awakening" card (above) says this to me: I am one who is open to the beauty of everything around me. I am one who is ready to be cracked open. I am one who is held safely in the ancient hands of Divine Love. I am one who has wings to make the journey.

It takes courage to break free of our usual patterns and habits, to be able to see ourselves and the world around us in a deeper way. We need to grow wings to do this.

As the garden outside my studio has awakened and transformed in the past weeks from brown to green, I’ve also been taking in the energy of the color green and thinking about how this color makes me feel. I associate the color green with fresh new growth. The mystic and Benedictine abbess, Hildegard of Bingen, used the term viriditas which translates as greenness to describe the life force within all creation. According to Christine Valters Painter: "Viriditas is the life energy that brings fullness to human beings in our quest to become more truly our authentic selves. It indicates vigor, fertility, and health".

My SoulCollage® card "Joyful Growth" (left) has a similar message for me: I am one who delights in the freshness of new growth. I am one who is enlivened by movement towards the light. I am one who is energized by the abundance of growing things in my garden. My gift to you is the reminder that things start small, but when the timing is right they spread and grow easily and without effort. I want you to remember that there is a right time for everything, and become more aware of the cycles of life so you can align more fully with them.

What awakening is growing in you right now?

Transpersonal cards, unlike our other SoulCollage® cards, are silent and without shadow. Although the Source, SoulEssence, and Witness cards in a SoulCollage® deck don't talk, that doesn't mean you can't talk to them! We can begin a dialogue with these Three Faces of Silence that helps us deepen our perception of the Mystery. Special exercises involving visualization, journaling, and sharing will focus on the Witness in the first session, the SoulEssence in the second session and the Source in the third and final session. Mariabruna has studied and co-presented with Seena Frost for over two decades.
