In July 2007 I wandered into a spiritual bookshop in Auckland, New Zealand and discovered Seena’s SoulCollage® book. I flicked through it with a growing feeling of excitement, sensing that this was something I could really get into. I had studied the tarot in the past, and had sometimes thought it would be nice to design my own tarot deck. Yet SoulCollage seemed even better, a deck of cards which was so much more personal and relevant.

As an adult I had somehow ended up as a music teacher, choir director, song arranger and writer of spiritual chants. All of my creative artistic energy had gone into music……and yet, as a child my first love had been the visual arts. I had spent most of my time drawing, playing with colour and designs.

So now I have returned to working with images in SoulCollage and I am finding it very satisfying on so many levels. Apart from the sensual pleasures of looking at images and placing them together to make new ones, I love the depth of revelation and self knowledge which is possible when I make the effort to journal my cards and use them for readings.

SoulCollage has made a difference in the way I cope with difficult emotions. Making a card for the part which is hurting has been extremely therapeutic for me, and brings a measure of peace.

I am a very social person, so almost as soon as I discovered SoulCollage I was telling my friends about it, hoping to get an ongoing group happening! Last June I did the Facilitator Training with Karen Mann and since then have enjoyed leading several workshops. It’s a wonderful feeling to have something like SoulCollage about which I feel so enthusiastic, and to show others the process and watch how they also connect with it. I have made quite a few passionate SoulCollage converts over here, and expect to make a lot more!

SoulCollage has also helped me to more deeply connect with my fiancée and my 22 year old daughter as they both enjoy making cards with me occasionally.

One bit of advice that I give to my SoulCollage students is to love themselves enough to make the effort to journal with their cards, and do readings with them. In this way they will get the most out of the process; they will find out that they are a rich tapestry of many parts, and will be better able to make positive changes to themselves and their world.

I find it fascinating the way that SoulCollage is spreading around the world, by means of people loving it so passionately that they can’t wait to share it. I am amazed that I am one of those people!

Two of my current favourite cards:

The Guide
Suit: Council

I wasn’t sure what this card was until I started journaling with it, and it turned out to be my own spiritual guide who is very happy that he/she can now communicate with me through SoulCollage and the journaling process.

I am the one who… leads you through the ancient gates and says “follow me.”
I am the one who leads you across the desert to the place of stars, where all is silent and empty.
I am the one who knows the ancient mysteries,
…..who has been with you since the beginning of time
……who is always with you
I am the one who is a very powerful and evolved spiritual being……
I am the one who is your personal guide and wishes to communicate with you regularly.

Leopard- 3rd Chakra
Suit : Companion

Leopard started to appear to me a few years ago before I knew about SoulCollage, when I needed to find my own power to get out of a relationship. So I wasn’t surprised when she turned up as my third chakra companion animal.

I am the one who knows my own power, who is perched and ready to defend my inner sanctuary, the beautiful golden rooms full of wisdom and spiritual jewels……
I am the one who knows my own worth, who will not put up with being treated badly……don’t mess with me, little man!

Our Next Tele-Class
Enriching Your SoulCollage® Practice with Ritual in the New Year
Presented by Jeanne Marie Merkel, M.Div.

SoulCollage and Ritual are natural partners. In this tele-class we will explore ways we can enrich and deepen our SoulCollage practice through ritual. We’ll begin with an experiential introduction to ritual – what it is, and how it can help us cross into a deeper mode of awareness and embody our intentions. Then we’ll look at how the SoulCollage Neters (Presences) come to us as sacred guests and how we can welcome them. And we’ll share ideas for New Year’s and seasonal SoulCollage rituals – Bring your own stories and experiences!

I would invite you to set up a small sacred space near your telephone before you call. Place on a special cloth: a candle (don’t light it yet), matches, one SoulCollage card or image that calls you, and any other object you feel drawn to place on the altar. Set your space with intention, center yourself, and then pick up the phone to join the class! (If for any reason you are unable to do this – don’t worry – you’ll have the opportunity to visualize the space you would have created!)

Jeanne Marie Merkel is a Ritual Artist, SoulCollage Facilitator, and Spiritual Counselor who lives in the coastal woodlands of eastern Long Island, NY. She received a Master of Divinity Degree in Psychology and Religion from Union Theological Seminary (NYC), where she studied Christian and Buddhist Contemplative Traditions, Jungian Psychology, the Spiritual Aspects of Trauma and Depression, Movement as Meditation, and the integration of spiritual practice, creativity, community and nature in healing.

Jeanne Marie is also a student of indigenous wisdom and an apprentice in the healing and ceremonial traditions of Peru . She is director of the Anam Cara Spiritual Visioning Network, and conducts Rites of Passage. She can be reached through www.anamcaracenter.net.

Soul Nourishment - Books

Knit Two, by Kate Jacobs. This is the long-awaited sequel to the much-loved Friday Night Knitting Club novel. Kate writes about women and community and relationships exactly the way they are in real life- warm and wonderful and messy too. There is something here for absolutely everyone, with lots of wisdom threaded in among the characters’ various story lines. You don’t have to love knitting to enjoy this wise and perfect novel.

The Second Half of Life: Opening the Eight Gates of Wisdom, by Angeles Arrien. Working with images, poetry, metaphors, and other forms of symbolic language from various world cultures, Angeles introduces us to the 8 Gates of Initiation, which are thresholds we must cross in order to fulfill our destiny on this earth. She takes us step-by-step through each gate in order to deepen our most valuable relationships, reclaim our forgotten creative gifts, and much more. Contains beautiful black and white photographs. A beautiful gift for yourself or another wise woman in your life.

Wisdom of the Heart, by Alan Cohen. A small book of potent wisdom that would make a beautiful gift for someone you love. Alan Cohen’s inspiration is deep, thought-provoking and wise. I read from one of his books daily and find my inner and outer life changing simply because of the way he writes.
