Quotation of the Week

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy;
for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves;
we must die to one life before we can enter another.

Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage Into Our Daily Lives

Angels Moving the Furniture

Recently I spent a few days changing the furniture around (literally, not metaphorically) in my Quiet Room. I had been feeling creatively stymied and dull as dirt whenever I walked in there... and then I realized exactly what I needed- a little feng shui can be sooo good for the soul! My desk is now near the window, and my art tables are near the door. I took every single book off of those shelves and dusted them off, then sorted through them and gave away quite a few.

It doesn't really matter though. Several months from now, I will have the same feeling (creatively blocked, restless, wanting something different) and I will rearrange the furniture the way it was before (and sustain several new black and blue marks from hefting the furniture too hard), and I will be happy because the room will be like new for me again, and my creative energy will be able to flow.

And this whole concept works on a larger scale as well. When I was in college, I had a friend in Divinity School who was helping me through a big transition I was going through. I was struggling, and the struggle was painful, but (kindof sortof) in a good way, because the change was a good one.

My friend told me he liked to think of such transitions as "angels moving the furniture around" in our minds. Wow! That really caught my attention and it has stayed with me these past thirty years. I still love the visual image that this brings up for me. A couple of shimmery, stalwart, loving Angels scurrying around on the inside of my life, shifting things around, and always for the good, no matter how many black and blue marks the changes leave on my soul.

Reflection Activities: Are you going through any personal changes or transitions right now in your life? If not, think back to the last big one you went through. What happens when you think in terms of Angels being involved in these changes, these transitions? Is there some area of your life right now, today, where the furniture needs to be moved around (or thrown out completely)? Make a SoulCollage card for a Committee part of you that resists changes in your life.

Ideas and Challenges to Spice Up Your SoulCollage Practice

Idea of the Week

Choose one SoulCollage card from your deck. Seat yourself in a comfortable position with a straight back. Study the card carefully. See if there's anything about this card that you didn't notice before. If you have done an I am the one who... exercise with this card, or have other writings about it, read them over briefly. Then close your eyes, take the essence of the card into your being and slowly breathe with the energy that the card evokes. Breathe the energy in... 1... 2... 3. Breathe out any energy that is stale or negative or unhelpful to you at this time... 1... 2... 3. Do this several times. Journal about what you noticed.

Upcoming Tele-Classes and Presenters:

January 4, 2009 (Sunday, 4 pm Eastern time) SoulCollage Rituals for the New Year, with Jeanne Marie Merkel, SoulCollage Facilitator in New York. Cultures all around the world have wonderful rituals to welcome the New Year... let's do the same with our precious practice of SoulCollage.

January 27, 2009 (Tuesday, 8 pm Eastern time) - Eckhart Tolle, SoulCollage® and the Source, with Fran Cherlow, SoulCollage Facilitator in California. We'll take an inspired look at the transpersonal nature of SoulCollage and the book A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, focusing on how we embody this understanding in our lives. Tolle says that consciousness (or the "I Am" experience) is in the background of our lives. What tools can we develop to build this awareness into our everyday lives and what relationship does it have with SoulCollage? Please bring your own questions and musing for this abundant discussion. Suggested handouts to read before the class. These include Quotations from the book A New Earth, reflection questions, and a chart that compares and contrasts concepts between SoulCollage and A New Earth.
NOTE: It is NOT necessary to read the book, A New Earth, before attending this tele-class.

February 2009 - How To Lead a SoulCollage Group if You're Not a Facilitator, with Imelda Maguire, SoulCollage Facilitator in Ireland. Looking for ideas on how to lead a SoulCollage group, whether or not you're a trained Facilitator? Imelda will share her years of experience leading SoulCollage. Please join us and share your own ideas too, or just hang out and listen.

March 2009 - The Voices of Our Addictions: Transformation Through SoulCollage, with Kat Kirby, SoulCollage Facilitator and Art Therapist in San Diego. Shopping, food, Internet use, other people, drugs, alcohol... These are all things that serve us for a time, take away our pain, but no longer work for us. We'll use this hour together to talk about ways we can use SoulCollage to remind us of our authentic self, thereby freeing ourselves of our addictions and finding our way back to health.

All Books For Less
Amazing website for any book lover. They have zillions of books (I'm not kidding!) on any topic you can think of, all at greatly reduced prices. It's not like Amazon or Half.com where you are buying from individual sellers. This is a reputable dealer and most of the books are available in quantity, which is great for book clubs as well as gift giving.

Awakenings, featuring Robin Williams, Robert De Niro.  A quintessential films about the spiritual practice of gratitude. Dr. Sayer, a shy neurologist, administers a new drug to a group of chronically institutionalized patients suffering from a kind of sleeping sickness that has turned them into living statues, conscious but not moving. One of them, Leonard, has been entombed in his body for 30 years. After receiving the drug, his rigidity vanishes. Now able to move, talk, and touch, he announces without bitterness: "I've been away for quite some time...  I'm back." As we watch Leonard rejoice in his daily activities, we realized the precariousness and preciousness of the physical sensations we too often take for granted. --- from Spiritual Rx, Prescriptions for Living a Meaningful Life, by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

Your Altar: Creating a Sacred Space for Prayer and Meditation, by Sandra Kynes. Creating an altar is a fun, creative activity that helps you to access spiritual stillness and your own inner wisdom. Sandra uses numerology, as well meditation techniques and examples of prayers, practices, and rituals from all major faiths in this wise and wonderful book. If you don't have an altar already, this will be inspiration. And if you do have an altar already, you'll find brilliant new ideas here as well.

Living Your Yoga: Finding the Spiritual in Everyday Life, by Judith Lasater. The author stretches the meaning of yoga beyond its familiar poses and breathing techniques to include the events of daily life... all of them... as practice. Off-the-mat practices are here to guide us in deepening our relationships with ourselves, our family and friends, and the world around us. This lovely book is both inspiring and practical, and useful even if you've never attempted a yoga pose in your life!

The Spirited Walker, by Carolyn Scott Kortge. I used this book as my bible several years ago when I was beginning to make physical activity an integral part of my life. It was helpful to me because the author speaks about walking, not just in terms of physical fitness, but also brings spirituality and emotional clarity into the picture. I still use some of the "mind work" she suggests in this book whenever I go walking now.
