Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage® into Your Daily Life
 Sacred Spaces, Sacred Places
I am writing this column from one of my favorite places/spaces in the real world, Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. I've given myself the gift of a three-day stay here this week, and I am basking in the glow of the snowy mountains, calming fragrance of incense and massage oil, healthy food, nourishing yoga classes... and most of all... the fact that when I'm here, I fall in love with myself all over again.
That may sound a bit arrogant, or self-centered, but it's not like that at all. There is just something about this place, the energy that lives here, that reminds me of who I am. As soon as I walk through the front doors, I always breathe deeply and with the outbreath of stress and "doing-ness," I suddenly am able to remember that divine spark within me.
When I first learned SoulCollage, I created a suit called "Sacred Places" and immediately made a Kripalu card (see right). Several months ago I heard Seena Frost talk about how we can include cards for special places like this in our Community Suit. So that's where this card "lives" now.
I really love having a Kripalu card in my SoulCollage deck. It serves as a blessed reminder of the gifts this place continues to give me. One day last summer when I was debating over whether or not to attend the Geneen Roth Retreat here, I drew this card in one of my daily readings! I never know when it's going to show up, but it always has wisdom to impart when it does.
I've been coming here for about 20 years. There was a period of about ten years when I didn't come here at all because I told myself that I didn't have the time. I can see now that that wasn't it at all. I was in the midst of a tumultuous time with difficult stepchildren, and I was buying into my Inner Critic's story about how I wasn't worth anything this good for myself.
After I was here last year, I set an intention to return once a year. But now I realize that I am worth this... I am worth anything that gives me this much pleasure, anything that reminds me on all levels of who I am. I think that next year I will come here at least twice!
Reflection Activity: Close your eyes and spend several minutes scanning back over your life. Where are the places and spaces that bring that sacred spark of divinity back to yourself? Make a list. These sacred spaces might be a specific place like Kripalu. Or they might be more general, like "the ocean," or "anywhere there's a lot of trees." You might go through old photo albums on your search also. Create a SoulCollage card for one of these sacred places this month and place it within your Community Suit. Let it speak to you of its meaning in your life. Choose one of your sacred places and begin to make arrangements to return there in person. You are worth it. You really, really are! |

| Soul Friends The Voice of a Different Kindred Spirit Each Week
Rita Benson Ontario, Canada Hi, my name is Rita and I am in love with the SoulCollage process. I first heard it referenced in a magazine article and went to Anne Marie's web site (KaleidoSoul) to find out more about it. I just started making some cards and felt deeply moved and changed by the process. One of the first cards I made is about losing my mother to Alzheimer's (shown below). I have made many cards, some about shadow parts of myself, some giving expression to powerful spiritual experiences, personal breakthrough moments, or parts of myself that I value or want to strengthen. I love the experience of feeling something within and then using images to find a way to express that. Sometimes I feel a physical and energetic shift inside me when a card captures something and I am then able to make a sound or breathe in a new way. Sometimes I am just awed at the beauty of the card or what it expresses. At times it feels good to put something horrible out on the card and be able to witness it there. I have made many cards about trauma I experienced as a child and find it healing to have those incidents and that pain acknowledged and expressed. At times I work out personal issues by making SoulCollage cards. For example I made a series of 3 cards about not having had a baby and by the third one there was a new message and understanding about the role of this in my life. I love it when cards hold "surprises" and teach me something that I didn't intentionally put there. I also love the writing process with the cards and the wisdom that comes. I have been making cards for about a year and a half. I am also a marriage and family therapist (as well as a SoulCollage Facilitator) so I have incorporated SoulCollage into my practice. I have offered two one day workshops in SoulCollage, and introduced women to SoulCollage as an added process on two 5 day summer retreats. Last winter I facilitated a SoulCollage/Sandtray Worldplay Group as part of my practice and it was very powerful. It amazed me how SoulCollage provided a way for each woman to enter herself deeply and even speak about things that were unspeakable before. I attended a spring retreat inMassachusetts this year with Anne Marie which was amazing and this past fall I completed the SoulCollage Facilitator's Training with Seena Frost. Another facilitator, Dianne Mathes and I are offering our first SoulCollage Weekend Retreat this coming February. A tip: I use a glass breadboard with yoga mat cut to fit the bottom so it doesn't slide around. It creates a lovely hard, even surface to make cards on and you can even use an exacto knife on them to trim edges of cards. These are very popular at the workshops. A favourite quote that I use at workshops: Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is, in the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness; touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden part of it, for in the last analysis, all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace. --Federich Buechner I am just beginning to create a new website and will post my cards there soon: www.soulcollage.ca Here are three of Rita's favorite SoulCollage cards:
Losing My Mom to Alzheimer's
Suit: Committee I am the one who is losing my mom to Alzheimer's. I am the one who watches my mother's brain disintegrate and who sees her blank face. I am the one who experiences how she is cut out of my life when she is supposed to still be here. I am the one who sends an angel and a white rose to honour the sacredness of my mother's journey. Ancestors Suit: Council We are the ones who are the ancestors. We are the ones who hold the wisdom and who hold you. We are the ones who cherish mother earth and know the holiness of all of life. We are the ones who live with our hearts wide open to the suffering, the joy, and the sacredness of life.
Stillness Suit: Committee I am the one who finds a way to stillness in the midst of it all. I am one who is willing to enter the stillness and whose soul is fed by the quiet there. I am one who discovers that stillness connects me to the Great Mystery and then connects me back to who I am.

Idea of the Week
Create a little ritual to begin each card-making session. Here are some ideas: Pause while lighting a small candle and take 3 deep breaths. Listen to the same some each time as you begin. Recite the same short poem or prayer.
Turning your SoulCollage time into a ritual like this reminds your spirit that this is sacred time, just for you, and that it is separate from the rest of your daily routines and tasks. |

2008 Soul Colors Desk Calendars
"Wow! It's like a little bit of therapy that fits in the palm of your hand," said one enthusiastic buyer when she picked up one of these nifty little calendars, created specifically for our KaleidoSoul readers.
Each month features a full-color, vibrant mixed media collage by Anne Marie Bennett, along with a quotation carefully chosen to lift your spirits and remind you of your own soul's true colors. The calendar is spiral bound this year, so it's easier to manage, and is printed on heavy, glossy cardstock, similar to (and the same size as) postcards.
On the back of each page are several Journaling Prompts as well as a few SoulCollage Suggestions, specially designed to help you bring the wisdom of the month's quotation into your daily life.
They make great gifts for people who don't practice SoulCollage too. Anyone who loves color and quotations and inner journeys will love this calendar. For more information, and to read what previous Soul Colors buyers have said about their calendars, please visit this Members Only Page.
Note: These calendars are only $12 for Kindred Spirit Members, or $10 each if you buy more than one. Non-members are paying $15, so you save 20% as a Member.
Tele-Classes If you missed last week's tele-class, Walking Toward Wisdom, about the Crone archetype with Sharry Teague, well... we missed you too! But we recorded it for you and you can listen to it in your Members Only Resource Library at any time.

Taking the Creative Journey: Moving SoulCollage Into the 3rd Dimension presented by special guest Barb Kobe, Healing Artist, Dollmaker & Creativity Coach and SoulCollage Facilitator Anne Marie Bennett
(Note: You can click on the game board image above to enlarge it.)
The Creative Journey is an adventure in self-discovery and creative problem solving. This is a process that Barb created after studying The Hero's Journey and The Heroine's Journey for several years. She created a visual diary of the journey (in the form of a collaged game board) along with 3-dimensional game pieces (similar to intentions of the SoulCollage cards) that travel around the board.
This process is a way of identifying your journey, of seeing the ongoing thread, theme or pattern to your own life's trek. It permits you to see the linkage between events and people in a way that provides meaning about self and others. This contributes to personal well-being and a greater sense of direction and conscious participation in life. As you design the game board and game pieces you clarify moments from the past, learn to live with the present, and begin to outline the future. Sharing the story of it with others can help you understand the context of your life journey. This tele-class will provide you with an overview of the process. It will explain how it can work side by side with the concept of SoulCollage. Barb will share pictures of others' game boards and characters, along with stories and examples.
There's more information about The Creative Journey experience on Barb Kobe's website. Just click on the words "Journey Game" near the top.

Resources to support your inner work as you dive deeper into your beautiful soul
Books:
The Bodacious Book of Succulence, by Sark. Another of my favorite books by this internationally-celebrated author. Full of fun, colorful tools that help us to turn our ideas into actions and teach us how to give ourselves permission to live succulent, juicy lives. You Can Do It! The Merit Badge Handbook for Grown-Up Girls, by Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas. Remember Girl Scouts and how earning badges was a great way to delve into different topics and learn about new and exciting things? Well, this is kindof like that Girl Scout handbook except it's for grown women, just like you! Start a band, build a business, throw a party, reconnect with a loved one, plant a garden, knit a scarf, walk on fire, give a speech, launch a web site, learn a new language, surf, tango... Whatever your dream it, you'll find help, encouragement, support, concrete ideas, and practical advice. The author began this book a year before she died on September 11, 2001 aboard Flight 93. Her family stepped in and finished the book in her honor. Proceeds from the book are donated to the Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas Foundation which supports charitable causes and scholarships for women. 100 Places Every Woman Should Go, by Stephanie Elizondo Griest. Looking for adventure, inspiration, celebration, empowerment, and/or renewal as you travel? Then you will love this book which is packed full of worldwide sites that make perfect short get-aways and longer vacations. Sections include: Powerful Women and Their Places in History, Places of Adventure, Places of Purification and Beauty, Places of Indulgence, Places of Celebration and Womanly Affirmation, Places of Inspiration and Enlightenment. Thirst, poems by Mary Oliver. This is a new collection of (43) poems by one of Seena's favorite authors, who is a Pulitzer prize winning poet. The trees whisper, a ribbon snake imparts lessons and the poet is likened to a swimming otter. Oliver's new work reflects her faith in God and her grief over the death of her longtime partner.
A Wish Can Change Your Life, by Gahl Sasson. Blending wisdom from traditions and cultures all over the globe into an unprecedented metaphysical mosaic, A Wish Can Change Your Life shows us how to tap the archetypal energies of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life - the eternal structure that created and animates everything in the universe - to fulfill any wish, whether it is for material gain (a new car, a higher salary), personal improvement and pleasure (weight loss, a better job, more intimacy with a partner), or a life-changing message from God.
Movies:
Waitress, featuring Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Andy Griffith, Adrienne Shelley, and Jeremy Sisto. If you're a fan of quirky, off-beat, lovely little independent films, then don't miss this one. The thing I loved best about this film (besides the fact that it has inspired my own pie baking frenzy, and besides the fact that it made me laugh in the most unexpected places) is that it shows a woman embracing and relishing her own enormous creativity (yes, she is a pie maker!) against all odds.
Websites:
The Gratitude Dance- Oh, you'll love this one! Takes just a few minutes to watch, and will definitely brighten your day. What do you have to be grateful for?
Heron Dance- Beautiful watercolor art that celebrates nature.
Femail Creations- Great selection of beautiful, useful, fun, personal growth gifts. I've used them often and have always been more than happy with their service and creative products. Holiday shopping, anyone?
