Quotation of the Week
All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them. --- Isak Dinesen Inner Journeys with Anne Marie Bennett
Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage® into Your Daily Life
Embracing Your Inner Villains I saw Shrek the Third last month and want to share my response to it with you. Besides being flat out funny, this movie also has a very imaginative subplot that all avid SoulCollagers should pay attention to.
In this subplot, Prince Charming is upset because he hasn't gotten his own "happily ever after." He makes his way to the Poison Apple Bar (don't you love it?!?) and finds a diverse group of storybook "villains" who have been banished forever from the Kingdom. Now just try to imagine this... every "bad" character you've ever come across in a story has been sent to a dark dreary land, and they are NOT happy about it! These "villains" include: a Big Bad Wolf, a Wicked Stepmother, Captain Hook, an Evil Queen, the Cyclops, Rumpelstilkskin, Mabel the Ugly Stepsister, the Headless Horseman, and assorted Black Knights and Magical Evil Trees (remember The Wizard of Oz?). The villains are angry and unhappy because they feel that no one has ever listened to their side of the story.
Read that sentence over again because it is really important! The villainous characters have been banished from the Kingdom, and they are furious and miserable because they've not been allowed to tell their side of the story.
Immediately, this storyline makes me think of my own inner Kingdom Queendom, and of all the shadowy, villainous parts of MySelf that I tend to banish from my general field of vision. I really love the happy, bright and shiny, perky little parts of my Self, (who doesn't?) and am always more than ready to listen to them. But I don't like looking at these darker parts, the dreadful and unpleasant pieces of my psyche. I don't often sit down with my own inner Captain Hook, my secret Evil Queen, my buried Black Knight, my concealed Ugly Stepsister... or any of them.
Why? Because they scare the heck out of me!
Frankly, who wants to admit that they have an "Evil Queen" in their inner family, an Evil Queen who sometimes is full of hate and longs to get her hands on a poisoned apple (or two)? Who wants to acknowledge there's a Big Bad Wolf that takes over their personality and bites peoples' heads off now and then? Absolutely no one. If there's a felon or crazy person in your family tree, you're probably not going to be talking about them with everyone who crosses your path. Best to keep family members like that hidden from view. And we do the exact same thing with our inner family, our inner Committee.
But I have found that the only way to make peace with these villainous parts of MySelf is to: - become aware of them
- visualize and name them
- sit down and listen to their side of the story
This little three-step process is way easier said than done, of course. But we have such a marvelous gift in SoulCollage! Through the creative process and our SoulCollage cards, we can become more aware of these darker shadowy parts of ourselves. We give each part an image and maybe even a name, and then through the I Am The One Who... practice, we sit down now and then and let it speak. One of SoulCollage's biggest gifts to us is that it allows our darker, more villainous parts to open up and tell their stories in safety.
At this point (I've been practicing SoulCollage for two and a half years), I have worked in depth with about six of my own inner villains. This kind of work takes time and gentleness and an inner acceptance that isn't always present with me, so I have learned to allow it time and space. BUT... I have found that when I pay attention to an inner villain, when I really can put aside my fear and sit down close and really listen, then that inner villain is much less a villain and more like a friend.
Meanwhile, back at Shrek the Third, Prince Charming (who has also been banished for being too perfect!), convinces all of the storybook villains to join him in battle for their own "happy ever after." I'm not saying anything more... just that if you do go to see it, remember your own inner villains and ask them what they have to tell you! Reflection activities of the week: Look again at the list of storybook villains listed above. Do any of them resonate with your own inner world? Are there any more that need to be added to your own list? Make a list of some of your own shadowy aspects that make you uncomfortable (some of mine include: greed, selfishness, a quick temper, and negativity). Then seek out images to use on a SoulCollage card for one of them. Remember, these shadowy parts are not to be feared!
SoulCollage Expressions
Idea of the Week
I use a Xyron machine to glue down my images on a card. You can buy cartridges that apply repositionable or permanent adhesive. ---- from Michele in MA
Question of the Week
I live in a really small space and I don't have room to spread out my SoulCollage "stuff." What do you suggest?
I purchased an inexpensive bed tray and bring it with me to the living room or bedroom when I want to work on my cards. It fits beautifully on my lap and has 2" sides all around it so little images don't fall off. ---from Cheryl in IL Soul Friends The voice of a different Kindred Spirit each week! Jo Hatcher Davis, California On Oct 3, 2006, I flew to a US Army base inGermany for a six-week assignment as a member of a team of therapists. Our purpose was to provide opportunities for soldiers and their families to talk about their stress and feelings without fear of "being on the record." As soon as I learned about my assignment, I thought how powerful it would be to offer SoulCollage there. I packed card stock, images, scissors, and rubber cement -- ready for any opportunity to share SoulCollage in a place where soldiers and their families were dealing with lengthy deployments toIraq, casualties, injuries, and uncertainty amidst closure of US bases inGermany. Little did I realize then just how intense my work would be. The day-to-day contrast was unsettling. One day I found myself sitting in a memorial service among grieving soldiers and families. The next day I witnessed a joyous welcome home ceremony for soldiers returning fromIraq after a yearlong deployment. Yet my experience was just a taste of what soldiers and their families go through on a constant basis. It was and is a very sobering experience. Although I wanted desperately to use SoulCollage in this setting, I knew from the instructions that "all materials and programs would have to be approved." The thought of working my way through the Army's bureaucracy and getting approval to use SoulCollage with the troops was a daunting prospect. In the end, I surrendered to working with what was possible during my short visit. What I hadn't foreseen was how important SoulCollage would become as a way to help heal the "healers." One night while unable to sleep, I pulled out my cards and asked questions about how to deal with all the sadness around me. When I had received my answers, I fell asleep with my cards scattered around me on the bed, as if the Neters all were with me that night, supporting and lifting me up. They gave me a sense of protection and comfort, and I slept a peaceful sleep in a world that seemed so crazy, full of grief and sadness. One day I introduced SoulCollage to my partner and team colleague. We spread out images and just made cards on the floor. SoulCollage gave us the permission and the process to express our own sadness and distress so that we could continue to be present in our work. My partner's card clearly indicated that she needed to slow down. She listened and cut back on her private practice after returning home. Now she's interested in using SoulCollage in her group work. On our last night together, I gathered with four therapists on my team for a SoulCollage session where we made and shared our cards. We had met frequently for dinner, worked together, and traveled together. In the course of just two weeks, we felt a unique bond from working together so intensely. It was so special to have SoulCollage as a way to honor our time together and process our feelings: our frustrations at not being to do enough to help, our struggle to find our way in a foreign country, our having to negotiate the rigidity of the Army all the while experiencing much suffering of the families. We were all amazed at the power of the experience. You can imagine how powerful our cards were and how valuable it was to have this way to express our emotions and our strong connection. After returning home I learned that my older son (age 23) had just been commissioned in the US Marine Corps as a 2nd Lt., and that my younger son (age 21), a junior at UCLA, is also in the process of becoming a Marine Corps officer and will be commissioned after his graduation next year. Their decisions to become Marines have been a shock to me, having worked this closely with soldiers in combat, so the parallels in my own life and my work with the Army have been surprising and powerful, to say the least. SoulCollage has helped me and will continue to help me deal with and process how I handle these experiences in my life right now.
I encourage all of you to use SoulCollage for comfort and peace when all around there may be darkness and to celebrate the resilience in all of us.

Here are two of Jo's current favorite SoulCollage cards:
 Aliveness
Suit: Committee
I am the one who is alive, vibrant and fully myself....a unique emerald cut. And I am the one who is running towards balance, longing for peacefulness. I am the one who searches for balance while giving so much to others. I am the one who stands up for the children, the innocent. I know that in order to do that I must be fully alive myself. This is the first card I made 3 ˝ years ago. I was thrilled with the creative part of making cards and less interested in the interpretation. At the time I was so stressed with figuring out how to get all the images to fit on one small card! It was a metaphor for my life at that time.......so busy and so out of balance. It's still one of my favorite cards. Currently I am inHawaii working for 7 weeks. I brought this card with me and as I look at it now, I am amazed to see that there is the beautiful Hawaiian woman dancing....... I am taking hula lessons while I am here and appreciating the intricate movements and how they each tell a story in the Hawaiian and Tahitian dancing. How fascinating to discover that my love of dancing showed up on the card long ago and now it has become a reality!

Salute to the Road
Suit: Committee
I am the one who acknowledges the road with reverence and wonder. I am the one who wonders where the road might take me. I am thrilled knowing that the road will lead me to where I need to be if I listen to my heart. I am the one who is drawn to the unknown and the surprises that lead me to discovering more about myself. I am the one who is afraid at not knowing and that I do it anyway. I am the one who searches for the opportunites in life. I picked this card because it represents my love of travel and also my sense of adventure. I continue to use it to remind myself to override my fears of the unknown and as a result that I become more confident by pressing through the fear.

SOUL NOURISHMENT Books, movies, music, & websites to support your inner work as you dive deeper into your soul....
Books:
Tear Soup:A Recipe for Healing After Loss, by Pat Schwiebert and Chuck DeKlyen. This is classified as a "children's book," but I beg to differ! I wish I'd found this gem so much earlier in my life... it would have made many of my own losses so much more bearable. What Tear Soup does (in my humble opinion) is consolidate many wise teachings on death, loss and grieving into one beautiful story about a woman named Grandy who has experienced her own loss and goes about creating Tear Soup in order to help herself heal. I can see this being used in support groups for adults as well as children around the world.
Perfect Love, Imperfect Relationships:Healing the Wound of the Heart, by John Welwood. This book really gets to the heart of why loving relationships can be so difficult, and how our deep longing for love can help us to heal the wounds that our heart has sustained in the past. Excellent resource for anyone currently in a relationship, or anyone who is seeking a new connection that is different from past relationships.
Many Winters, edited by Nancy Wood. Drawings and paintings by Frank Howell. A slim volume that is rich in imagery as well as the wisdom and poetry of the Pueblo Indians.
The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It, by Geneen Roth. This book is not just about cats. It's really about life and loss and how to go about accepting our beautiful selves, flaws and all. Powerful book by one of my favorite authors.
