Books: Belong To Me,by Marisa de losSantos. If you are looking for a novel where thecharacters are as real as your own friends and family, then you will love this new novel. There areseveral characters' stories interwoven into one big loving novel about familyand community and home and friendship and love. It truly is the kind of novel that you don't want to end. One of my favorite reads so far this year.
Three Cups of Tea,by Greg Mortenson. In 1993 a mountaineernamed Greg Mortenson drifted into an impoverishedPakistan village after a failedattempt at mountain climbing. Moved bythe inhabitants' kindness, he promised to return and build them a school. This book is the story of that promise andits amazing outcome. Over the nextdecade he built not one, but fifty-five schools (especially for girls) in theforbidding terrain that gave birth to the Taliban. His story remains a testament to the power ofcommunity and the ability of one person to make a difference.
Pilgrim Heart: TheInner Journey Home, by Sarah York. This beautifully crafted volume is a keen exploration of the art ofinner and outer pilgrimage. Even ifyou've never left your hometown, you're still on an inner journey, and Sarahshares her soul with us as she delves into them both.
Healing Rage:Women Making Inner Peace Possible, by Ruth King. If you're struggling with anger management, this book will be enormously helpful to you. It's written in a way that teaches us how to embrace our pain, confusionand rage in a way that opens a pathway to liberation, healing, and vision.
The Red Book,by Sera Beak. A Deliciously Unorthodox Approach to Igniting Your Divine Spark. This book is described by one reviewer as "aspiritual fire starter... a combustible cocktail of Hindu Tantra and ZenBuddhism, Rumi and Carl Jung, goddesses and psychics, shaken with cosmicnudges, meaningful subway rides, haircuts, relationships, dreams, andintuition." Need I say more? Okay, Iwill. It's wise and witty and smart...everything you need to grow your own spiritual life into a flourishing of yourtrue authentic self.
Movies:
The Secret of RoanInish, featuring Jeni Courtney, Pat Slowey. Thisfilm is about an affinity for a type of geography, a landscape, or a particularplace. Ten year old Fiona is sent tolive with relatives on the Irish coast. She listens intently as her grandfather talks about the ancestral homethey had to abandon on the nearbyislandofRoan Inish. Later, when Fiona visits there, she feelsdrawn to its gulls, seals, abandoned buildings, and ghostly inhabitants. This lyrical film speaks to the spirituallonging for home and the ways connections are conveyed through familystories. ---from Spiritual Rx, Prescriptions for Living a Meaningful Life, byFrederic and Mary Ann Brussat
