The Year of Pleasures, by Elizabeth Berg. This is one of my favorite novels by one of my favorite authors. When Betta Nolan's husband dies, she honors a promise she made to himto move to a small town and start a new life. Without minimizing hergreat sorrow, she nevertheless attempts to find pleasure on a dailybasis. The Year of Pleasures is about deliberately acknowledging thesolace found in ordinary things: a warm bath, good food, the beauty ofnature, music, art found in museums and in gardens. Above all, it isabout the various kindnesses people can and do offer one another.Betta's journey from grief to joy is an inspiring reminder of what isavailable to us all, regardless of our life circumstances. It suggeststhat no matter who we lose, life can still give bountifully to thosewho will receive.

Movies:
American Beauty, featuring Kevin Spacey, Alison Janney, Annette Bening, Thora Birch. There is so much to love about thisfilm. Every time I watch it, I amreminded to pay attention to the beauty that is around me every day- the beautyin nature, in myself, and in the faces and lives of the people I love.
Music:
Elephant Prayers, by Daniel Paul. The songs on this beautiful CD are simple, slow and soothing. They are based on a popular devotional form of folk music known as kirtan. Found in India for thousands of years, kirtan is a simple prayer sung with love and devotion, a gospel style of singing from the heart. Male and female voices mingle with bamboo flute, harp, dulcimer and other instruments. You can listen to a minute from each of the tracks too. Better still, purchase the mp3 version and the cost goes down.
Seasons of the Soul, by Karen Olson. Soothing, calming viola mediations that will help you go to hold still. I use this music to calm myself after a busy day, and to ease myself into meditation and/or sleep. You can listen to a minute from each of the tracks too. Better still, purchase the mp3 version and the cost goes down.
