Quotation of the Week
In order to create, you've got to eliminate thinking,
then focus and listen to your internal voice. ---Elizabeth Winter-Noyes Soul Friends The Voice of a Different Kindred Spirit Each Week Jane LothianMaynard, MA I'm Jane Lothian of Maynard, Massachusetts, and I discovered SoulCollage® in July 2007. When I read the description in the schedule for a local retreat center, I loved the idea of a simple, art-centered process for self discovery. What I like best about SoulCollage® is the surprising insight that surfaces during readings. SoulCollage® helps me slow down and be in the moment - the moment when I am flipping through a magazine, sifting images I've clipped, arranging them in a frame or drawing a card for a reading. As a technical writer, I make my living organizing words and concepts, immersed in detail. I often feel drained and overwhelmed, and the act of working on cards or reading them shifts my energy and gives me an opportunity for play, creativity, and reflection. SoulCollage® lets me lose myself in images and impressions. When I set aside my natural tendency to plan and analyze, and assemble cards in a state of trust and spontaneity, the results always surprise me. My advice for others is to have fun with it. I recently challenged myself to create a card using pictures from a single magazine based on a suggestion in one of Anne Marie's e-books, and loved the result. When I can't think of a project, I look through my deck and work on a card for the suit that has the fewest cards. My usual process is to begin with a theme and select images that feel like they reflect it (I usually use an odd number, typically three pictures, one large and two smaller ones). Then I go through my big folder of backgrounds and pick a background that seems to work. Of course, there have been many exceptions, where some images just seemed to fit together! I like to use colored matte board and put my picture on the colored side, leaving an edge like a frame. Selecting a color that complements the background and images is half the fun for me. You can visit my website at From the Riverbank. Here are a couple of my favorite cards -- one of my oldest, and one of my latest: ![]() Turtle Artist Committee I am one who takes my time I am one who is at ease with my art I am one who is ready to create I am one who is inspired This was the first multiple-image card I created.

The Native American Medicine Wheel offers us a sacred container to honor the wisdom of the seasons and cycles of life, the elemental qualities, and the guidance of animals and archetypal energies. We will imagine ourselves sitting in the center of our own medicine wheel, inviting in the elements of the four directions in relation to the four SoulCollage® suits as a gift of support. We will work with the guidance of the Visionary, Healer, Teacher, and Warrior as they represent the energies of the four directions. Our time together will be experiential, with lots of time for questions and sharing. Alexa has led women's rituals including rites of passage for over twenty years using the medicine wheel as the sacred container to hold the experience. She has been actively engaged in the use of dreamwork, movement, and expressive artwork (both personally and therapeutically) as a process for guidance and healing. June 14, 2009 (Sunday, 5pm Eastern) - Meditation and SoulCollage®: How Each Enhances the Other, with Marti Beddoe, Meditation Teacher and SoulCollage® Facilitator in Illinois. July, 2009 - SoulCollage® and the Art of Sacred Listening, with Laura Hegfield, SoulCollage® Facilitator in New Hampshire. During this tele-class, Laura will offer some practical tips for incorporating more silence into your life and your SoulCollage® practice (alone, with friends or as a facilitator in workshops). Laura is a SoulCollage® Facilitator, Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach, Yoga & Jewish Spirituality Teacher, Artist, Blogger, Wife and Mom practicing the sacred art of "life" in Southern NH.
