Books:
Facing the Lion,Being the Lion, by Mark Nepo. Subtitle: Finding Inner Courage Where It Lives. And where it lives, according to Nepo, isinside of us. He shares stories ofordinary people, political activists, artists, and spiritual teachers from a varietyof traditions, all people who are summoning the best of who they are in allkinds of moments, big and small. These shortstories and essays invite us each to stand by our core and to then sustain thepractice of living from our core. Beautifully written, incredibly wise.
Living Out Loud, by Anna Quindlen. I absolutely adore Anna Quindlen's essays. They are full of life, truth, wit and honest intelligence This selection is particularly inspiring. Her work always helps me see myself and the world in new ways.
You're Not You,by Michele Wildgen. Warm, real, andriveting novel about 20-something unfocused Bec who goes to work for30-something Kate, a refined woman with Lou Gehrig's disease. The inner changes that Bec goes through as shebefriends the older woman are riveting. Intimacy andSolitude: Balancing Closeness andIndependence,by Stephanie Dowrick. Being alone andrelating to others... both have the potential for immense personalsatisfaction. But they can also seempainfully difficult to balance. Dowrickbegins with the assumption that intimacy and solitude are not opposite ends ofa spectrum, just different expressions of the same self. She uses lots of spiritual and psychoanalyticresources as well as many rich tales from her own life.
Circle of Stones:Woman's Journey to Herself, by Judith Duerk. This has been on my shelf for years and Ijust picked it up the other day and was reminded about its power to heal andenlighten. It's a book about women helpingwomen, about mentoring and bonding, and about the sacredness of women beingthere for each other at all stages of our lives.
The Brazilian Healer with the Kitchen Knife, by Sandy Johnson . This author takes on the role of interested observer and journalistto tell the often incredible stories of the gifted people who tend towounded bodies, spirits, and souls outside of traditional medicine. From the spectacular to the sublime, these are the people some turn towhen the "white-coated wizards" say, "I can't help you" or "There is nohope." Their work is controversial and profound - and there areopportunities for exploitation. But for many people it had made all thedifference in their lives, leading them to complete healing - mind, body, and soul.
Movies:
Mr. Magorium'sWonder Emporium, featuring Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, JasonBateman. When the 243 year old Mr.Magorium discovers his health is failing, he turns over his fantastical toystore to the quiet, depressed manager, Molly Mahoney.
