Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage® into Your Daily Life
What Do You See In Your SoulCollage Mirror?
I first heard the above quote from a yoga teacher years ago in reference to one's yoga practice, but until recently I'd never thought of it in terms of my SoulCollage practice.
At the end of my SoulCollage workshops, I usually invite participants to share, if they choose, a few words about what they are taking with them from the experience. Usually they talk about how centered they feel after finding images and making cards, or how much fun it was to play like a child again with glue and scissors and colorful pictures.
One woman, though, responded differently to the question, and her comments made me look at SoulCollage very differently. What she said went something like this: Well, I've been sitting here for two hours and I've started three cards but I haven't finished any of them. I've been really enjoying looking through the magazines and ripping out pictures. I have all these nice little piles of images all over the table and yet I can't seem to decide which ones should go on which card. But you know what? I just realized something. This is exactly the same thing that is happening in my life right now. There's a lot going on, a lot of decisions I have to make and yet I can't seem to make any of those decisions. I'm hung up on gathering the facts and kindof stuck in that place of having to decide but not wanting to decide.
Everyone around the table really identified with what she was saying. Not because they were stuck making decisions in their lives, but because they suddenly saw the process of SoulCollage as a mirror that had lots of information to give them about themselves.
Think about it for a moment. We all know that there is no "right way" to "do" SoulCollage. The only way is your way and that way will change over time. But look at how you've been approaching the process these last few weeks. Have you been diving right in and getting your hands dirty? Have you been avoiding it? By the way, avoiding something is very different from simply choosing not to do something. Do you have stacks of images lined up but can't seem to get started on a card? Are you making cards intentionally but can't seem to make one intuitively (or vice versa)? Have you been making lots of cards but then putting them aside because you're not comfortable getting to know them more deeply?
There are a million scenarios of how you can approach this process. More than a million, I suppose. But the important thing is to look at your own process at this moment in time and take note of what this is saying about other areas of your life. Not to judge (I repeat, and highlight: not to judge!!!)... but simply to become more aware of who we are and of what's going on inside of us.
The woman at my workshop told me later that because she noticed what she was doing with the stacks of images, it freed her up somehow to actually make a few of the decisions in her life that needed to be made. And she would never have been aware of what she was doing if it hadn't been for her self-observations during SoulCollage.
Reflection activities of the week: Take a look at how you've been approaching SoulCollage in the last month or so. Look at any thoughts or feelings that are connected with what you've been doing and how you've been doing it. Remember, this isn't about judging yourself. Do not invite your Inner Critic into this space of observation. You may become aware of another inner voice or two. You might notice any number of things! Simply pay attention to what you become of aware of. Journal it or collage what you are discovering. You don't have to change anything. The awareness is enough.
SoulCollage Expressions
Idea of the Week
You can change the names of the suits to "suit" you better. One person does it this way: Inner tribe (personality parts), Outer Tribe (those who shaped, inspired, taught her), Nature Tribe (Elements, animals, plant kingdom, fairies, devas..etc), and Spirit Tribe (invisible helpers). If the terms Committee, Community, Companions and Council are confusing to you or just don't resonate, feel free to name them whatever you'd like!
Question of the Week
What is the difference between a SoulCollage interpretation and a reading?
An interpretation is when you work with one SoulCollage card to get to its meaning, to hear what it is saying to you. There are many, many ways to do an interpretation of a SoulCollage card. There's a great e-book in your Kindred Spirits Shop called How To Interpret Your SoulCollage Cards that you can read for further information. A reading is when you use your deck as a whole to answer a question you have about your life's journey. You usually draw cards at "random" to answer the question. (Note: next month we'll have a new e-book on this topic for you too!)
Soul Friends
The voice of a different Kindred Spirit each week!

One summer day in
New York City
, I googled "collage" and up popped a website called "SoulCollage." Immediately intrigued, I clicked on the link. I am a painter and collage artist, and at that time I was working on images related to my healing ritual trainings with African shaman Malidoma Some. I live in a world guided by spirit, and the use of the word "soul" attached to an art process had great meaning for me. I had to know what it was.
I emailed Seena Frost some questions, and she responded. I didn't think anymore about it. Then, a few months later, I received an email about a weeklong workshop in the Berkshires with one Seena Frost! I was interested but deeply tied up in my professional life at a NYC museum and didn't feel that I had time to take a week off. Spring followed a hard winter, and two friends (one artist, one therapist) told me that I needed a vacation. Still resisting, I looked at the Kirpalu website, read the blurb for the workshop again, and signed up for a snorer's room!
I fell in love with SoulCollage. It offered a context for my seeking spiritual nature, my artistic nature, and my deep interest in identifying and coloring my inner world. September rolled around, and I found myself in
California
at a facilitators training led by Seena and Kylea. The training was another powerful experience.
Sharing SoulCollage
After the training, I was moved to put the process into immediate action for others. I work at a museum and facilitated a workshop for education interns there. Using a theme to focus them, the interns got right to cutting and pasting, and came up with language for describing their cards that was reflective, surprising, and moving. These young professionals voiced fears about their own teaching and working with audiences and gratitude for the opportunity to express their personal side within a work context. They noted that the process was meditative (not some old art project!) and felt like ritual.
It was a thrilling experience for me and has bonded all of us in a way that might not have been achieved in their ten- month stay at the museum. My hope is that these interns will remember their own feelings when they interact with the children visiting the museum.
The interns refer to SoulCollage often. One said she would drum up business if I wanted to do another workshop away from the museum, and another intern is planning to do a collage workshop with high school teens.
Not long after the workshop, I made a trip to Sarasota, Florida to see my 83-year-old mother. During my visit I set up tables and magazines for a SoulCollage workshop with seven of her friends. Although these retired professional women are on the opposite side of the spectrum from the museum interns, I talked about the meaning of SoulCollage, the four suits, and Seena in basically the same way. I also gave them a theme to focus their work. Since neither group knew what they were in for when they sat around the tables, I thought it was only fair that I ease the way. (I think if people knowingly sign up for a SoulCollage workshop, my goals would have been specifically about creating a card for one of the suits. However, in both of these cases the "SoulCollage" process was a surprise.) My mother's friends worked diligently, at first picking an image intuitively, and then using it to create a card around how they see themselves as retired people at this time in their lives. Beautiful and insightful, it was a wonderful experience for all of us.
Back in NYC, one of the interns asked me to talk to her friend in Chicago about SoulCollage to help her structure a workshop for teens and women in the shelter system. We talked extensively, and she did lead a small group of women in their early 20s, along with some staff. Everyone had a wonderful experience, and the women were eager to make more cards at home. The Aftercare Department that sponsored the workshop wants her to do more workshops and proposed setting up a "collage corner" in their office.
For my birthday, I decided to have a SoulCollage "sister circle." I invited a few friends over. We had a wonderful, soulful afternoon and evening. One woman said she had been waiting her whole life to see an image of a black girl doing her communion. (Before everyone came, I had ripped out an image of three black girls in white lace for the pile). This woman turned it into a triptych and expressed a story she hadn't shared since childhood. My friends lingered around for hours. My daughter, who struggled for five hours to make one card the last time we did it, easily produced a most honest and revealing card. The power of this process is inspiring. After my daughter (age 31) returned home, she told a friend about the workshop. They called and asked if I would do a workshop with their friends.
The power of the SoulCollage process is inspiring! I guess Seena is aware of the magic she has created. I am happy to be an emissary.

Upcoming Tele-Playshops
April:
Your Personal Totem Pole
Presenter: Anne Marie Bennett
Do you get the part about animal totems but aren't sure how they're related to the chakras? Then join us for this tele-class which will be (in part) based on the book The Personal Totem Pole, by Eligio Stephen Gallegos (more information below in the Books section). This is the book that Seena Frost references when she talks about the Companions Suit of our SoulCollage Decks. We'll talk about animal totems and we'll talk about chakras, but most of this class we'll be talking about how the two are intertwined. This will make a huge difference in your understanding of the Companions Suit and of your animal guides' place in your life as well.
Date: Sunday April 15, 2007
Time: 6 pm EST
Save the dates now. The tele-playshops are FR*EE for all members, always! We'll send you the phone number to call in upcoming issues of Soul Treasures. And remember, don't worry if you can't attend... we'll be recording them and you can listen to them anytime in your Member's Only Audio Library.
Speaking of which, we recorded last week's Tele-Playshop and it's now in your Audio Library for your listening pleasure. It's called Creating a Personal History Suit for Your SoulCollage Deck, and our guest presenter was Anne Boedecker, a Kindred Spirit in New Hampshire. I'm sure you'll find this class as inspiring and helpful as I did!
SOUL NOURISHMENT
Books, movies, music, & websites to support your inner work as you dive deeper into your soul....
Books:
Success is the Quality of Your Journey, by Jennifer James. If you love quotations, self-discovery and becoming more aware of life as a journey and process, then you will love this wisdom-filled, insightful little book. I've had mine for years and refer to it often.
The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life, by Thomas Moore. I am totally enthralled with this book, even though it is so rich and deep that it is taking me a while to actually read it. I find that I am savoring this writing like a fine bold wine... just a little bit at a time is enough to delight in its value and grace.
Moore
's point in writing this wonderful book is that "enchanted engagement with life is not a childish thing to be put away with adulthood but a necessity of our personal and collective survival." So read this then, and become re-enchanted (and re-acquainted) with your own sweet life.
Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul: 101 True Stories of Angels, Miracles, and Healings, edited by Arielle Ford. If you like wonderful, engaging tales of real-life mysterious happenings, then you'll love this book. Divided into categories: Mystical Places, Magical Moments... Divine Guidance and Inner Direction... Romances of the Soul... Spiritual Healing... Help From Above... Vision... and The Other Side. The stories are all short, but packed with meaning and hope.
How You Do Anything is How You Do Everything: A Workbook, by Cheri Huber and June Shiver. I'd never heard of this, but someone on the KaleidoSoul Yahoo Group mentioned it recently and I looked it up on Amazon.com. It comes highly recommended by all the reviewers there. Take a look and see if it's for you.
Websites:
All Books 4 Less-
I use this site as much as I use Amazon.com to build my personal library of books about self-discovery, creativity and... well, just about everything under the sun. Their inventory changes all the time, so I keep going back and doing searches on my favorite authors and topics all the time. Their prices and shipping fees are less than Amazon's, plus you can buy most of the titles in quantity (if you want to) which is great for gift-giving and reading groups.
Touch Drawing- Have you heard of this yet? I don't think I've seen anything this fascinating since SoulCollage came my way. I was at an Altered Books workshop recently and the teacher was talking about a class she'd taken a few years ago in this. I was really interested and so she brought out the Touch Drawings she'd done during that class. They were amazing and beautiful. The whole process seems rather like SoulCollage in that it combines imagery and intuition in ways that are deep and potentially healing.
Photo Archives- Access to over 27,000 public domain, copyright-free (and beautiful!) images to use for your SoulCollage cards! (website passed on to us from Cheryl in IL...thanks Cheryl!).
