Quotation of the Week
  Inspirational words to ponder.....

What I do is based on powers we all have inside us;
the ability to endure; the ability to love, to carry on,
to make the best of what we have -
and you don't have to be a 'Superman' to do it.
--Christopher Reeve

Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage® into Your Daily Life

Journey Through the Chakras: Third Chakra

I don't know about you, but when I started practicing SoulCollage, I knew very little about the chakras.  I stepped out into the Companions Suit blindly trusting Seena's voice on her Introduction to SoulCollage CD.  My first steps into the Chakras found me chatting with a Little Brown Bird in my Heart Chakra area.  After that, I spent a little time in each of the chakras as I discovered my Animal Companions who lived there.

Lately, though, I've found myself longing to know more about the Chakras, on a more personal level.  So I've decided to take myself on an eight-month Journey Through the Chakras.  Yes, I know there are seven chakras; when I began learning more about the First Chakra, I decided that I needed to spend an extra month on the first one.

So, this article is one in a series on  each of the seven chakras.  If you missed the previous articles,  you can catch up on  the previous chakras by going to your Members Home Page and clicking on the" Soul Treasures Back Issues" icon.

Powerful Balance

Yellow was the predominant color on my home altar last month as I focused in on the energies of the third chakra, and my Animal Companion who resides there, Butterfly.  I found myself breathing deeply and more often into my solar plexus, the area of my body between breastbone and belly button.

In my work with Anodea Judith's book Sevenfold Journey, one word kept popping up into my consciousness: power. Many other ideas and concepts are associated with the third chakra (authority, control, will, warmth, ease, transformation, humor...), but power is the one that caught my attention this time around.

According to Anodea Judith, true power comes from harmony and balance. Light and shadow.  Male and female.  Strength and vulnerability.  Lower chakras and upper chakras.

In a society where the word power has many negative and even scary connotations, I found it quite a paradigm shift for me to begin thinking of power in a positive, healthy, transformative way.  I even created a Spiritual Warrior card for my SoulCollage deck.  Anodea Judith describes this archetype as "one who is willing to stand their ground, to protect the sacred within, to accept challenges, and maintain power in a firm and quiet way."

My third chakra power animal is Butterfly.  When I first realized that this tiny fragile creature was my power animal, I was a bit distressed.  I had been expecting a larger, "stronger" animal like Lion, Wolf, or Cheetah.  However, in spending time with Butterfly, I am realizing how much power and strength there is inherent in the complex transformation that she undergoes from cocoon to true flight.  I can see how her power does exist even though she is small and seemingly fragile.  True balance in action. True power at work, in nature, in the world, in my body and in my life.

Reflection Activity of the Week: Take a few moments to breathe into the solar plexus area of your body (below your breast bone and above  your belly button).  What is this part of your body trying to tell you right now? What beliefs do you hold about the concept of power?  When in your life do you feel most and least powerful?  Is there some way to bring more balance into your life so that you can claim a bit more of your own power this week?

Soul Friends
The Voice of a Different Kindred Spirit Each Week

Suzanne Jobling
Cambria, California

I was originally drawn to SoulCollage in 2004 through Seena's book.   I borrowed it from a friend because I was interested in the art of collage.  I was immediately drawn into the creative, physiological and spiritual process that it offered.

Making cards allowed me to see the many parts of myself in a tactical, safe and revealing way.  I realized how, I personally, was a kaleidoscope and each part of me was a sacred and important piece of my whole self.  Even those parts that challenged me offered gifts of self-awareness, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness.  In turn, the parts that had guided me and supported me throughout my life became clear and more available and I felt immense gratitude for them.  Clarity and wisdom flowed as I selected the images, pasted them down and allowed the cards to speak to me.  I was growing, learning and awakening.    Little did I know I was laying a strong foundation for the next major chapter in my life.

I took the SoulCollage Facilitator Training in September of 2004.  I taught classes and shared the process with others.  My cards were my friends, they helped me stay grounded and open.  Then the opportunity to become a Co-Active Life Coach came knocking on my door.  So in August 2005, at the age of 57, I went back to school.

Today I have a successful Life Coaching practice and I am passionate about the work I do.  I have also co-authored Color Me Wonderful, a Coloring Book and Journal for Women©I believe SoulCollage helped me discover and embrace the many parts of myself and called me forth to this amazing time in my life.

I also believe SoulCollage is a doorway to our creative, resourceful and whole selves.  It is a beautiful and sacred process that can reflect the wonder of who we are as human beings.   All we have to do is pick the images, paste them to the cards and let them speak to our hearts. They will tell us the truth.

In closing, I want to share that  I make my cards on recycled CDs.   I love working in the round so they are a great starting point and the backs are ready-made mirrors reminding me that each card is a reflection of my authentic self.

Please visit my website, Creative Resourceful Whole.

Here are two of Suzanne's favorite SoulCollage cards:

Grace

I am the who reminds you,
Grace has always been with you
and always will be.

Women

I am the one who honors the women who have gone before me, the women who are present in my life, and those who will follow me.   They freely give the gift of courage, strength, hope and love.

SoulCollage Expressions

Idea of the Week

I used to organize images in at least 20 (or more)
categories. It was useful--especially when giving a workshop
organized around a particular theme. But in the last year I've
succumbed to chaos and surprisingly, I love it. I have two large drawers full of miscellaneous clipped images. When I do organize, it's by size--small, medium and large--in order to make putting them out easier.

It's so much fun and creativity-inspiring for me to see wildly different images together. Who knows?  In the future, my organizational impulse may return, but for now, chaos rules!  -- From Sara in California

Upcoming Tele-Classes

February

Embracing the Mystery
of the Shadow

presented by special guest Karen Mann,
SoulCollage Facilitator in Australia
and Anne Marie Bennett,
SoulCollage Facilitator in Massachusetts

We all have aspects of ourselves that we wish we could hide and pretend that they don't exist. Some of the shadowy parts of self may include the jealous self, angry self, guilty self, lazy self, the victim, the liar, the addict, the opinionated one, the judgmental one, the impatient one etc Often these parts of self may seem broken, disgusting or weak and we try to suppress them because they seem unacceptable and do not fit in with the 'norms' in society.

In this SoulCollage tele-class, we will approach our shadow aspects as a mystery to be explored, rather than a problem to be solved or an illness to be cured. You will learn to see each shadowy aspect as only one piece of you and not as your whole being.

Books:

Tough Transitions: Navigating Your Way Through Difficult Times, by Elizabeth Harper Neeld, PhD.  This author has written an exceptional book that teaches us how to take on challenges of all kinds, and offers a new path that leads to happiness and growth.  She uses the metaphor of journey and has created a life-map just for this book.  Blending the latest scientific research, real-life stories, and the wisdom of many spiritual traditions, she reveals what experiences you're likely to encounter and what positive actions you can take to move forward.

Blessing: The Art and the Practice, by David Spangler.  This powerful book offers simple, practical steps in using our power to bless as part of a spiritual practice for personal transformation.  Includes many examples of blessings, as well as exercises for you to do.

A Summer All Her Own, by Rosanne Keller.   Beautifully written novel of a middle aged woman who travels toGreece to start a new life. Also shows the story of her reclaiming herself as an artist.

St. George and the Dragon and the Quest for the Holy Grail, by Edward Hays.  This is the well-told story of a 20th Century St. George, who was not a saint, and a dragon with glowing wounds who prepared him for a sacred search.  As a Chinese Mystery Box holds boxes within boxes, so this book contains 22 parables woven within one story: the journal of an adventure that echoes the greatest of all quests.

Divining the Body, by Jan Phillips.  Beautifully written and presented, by the author of the book Marry Your Muse.  I'm slowly reading and savoring this book, which promises to help you "reclaim the holiness of your physical self."  There's a chapter on each part of the body, including: feet, legs, hand, bag, generative organs, belly, heart, breasts, throat, ears, eyes, and brain.  Also each chapter includes practical exercises and meditations to bring that part of the body into our consciousness more fully and with sacred reverence.  This book is really helping me on my journey towards self-love and self-acceptance.

Websites:

Out of the Mists: The Art of Claudia Connelly.  Four pages of gorgeous high quality art prints with a certain spiritual, archetypal quality to them.

Color Me Wonderful- by Suzanne Jobling (see Soul Friend profile above).  At last... a coloring book for grown-ups!  Get out your crayons and watch yourself come to life with these marvelous drawings and affirmations.

Peace Pulse- This is a (no-charge) service to use on your computer that plays a single gentle chime each hour to remind you to take a moment for yourself. The program works from a web page. It is so easy to get caught up in the day's activities and forget to take time out each hour. This is a very useful practical reminder.

World Prayers- This is one of my favorite spiritual sites.  There are prayers of adoration, celebration, invocation, and meditation. You can even spin the vitual prayer wheel for a "random" prayer to be given to you.
