Soul
Singing with Anne Marie |

Hi! I'm
Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a
SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting
to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for
you.
The Tricky
Triangle
This month's theme focuses on our Inner Perfectionist, so I want to
share a bit about how this Neter sometimes joins forces with two
other shadow Neters to form a "tricky triangle." These are the Rule
Maker and the Inner Critic. My Perfectionist card is in the
"KaleidoSoul Creations" column, to the right. In this column you
can see my Inner Critic, Ethel, and my Inner Rulemakers.
I first heard about this Tricky Triangle in a wonderful book called
Embracing Your Inner Critic by Hal and Sidra Stone. They talk
about how these three parts work together as a twisted
triumvirate.
 Let's start with
the Rule Maker. This inner part makes up the rules about
what kind of a person we "should" be and what kinds of
characteristics are unacceptable. The rule maker is usually formed
early in life. It looks around, notices what's being rewarded and
what's being punished, then develops a set of rules for us to live
by, based on what it sees. This rule maker part is trying to keep
us safe with these rules.
Now, let's talk about the Perfectionist. The perfectionist
wants us to look perfect, act perfect and be perfect all the
time, and in everything we do. This Neter doesn't tolerate a
shoddy job. He or she loves to link arms with the rule maker
because they looooove the idea of rules and thoroughly enjoy the
process of carrying them out perfectly.
Last but not least, let's
focus on the Inner Critic. The inner critic's original
function is to spare us shame and pain; it wants to tell us
something bad before someone else does. Here is something he/she
says often - "If only you'd improve yourself, your life would be
perfect." Once again here's the connection to the
Perfectionist and Rule Maker. Your Perfectionist likes your life to
be played perfectly by the rules and the Inner Critic criticizes
you whenever that's not happening.
The Inner Critic's job is to get us to live up to the standards and
rules that were set years ago by the Rule Maker. However, as you
probably already know, this standard is usually impossible to
maintain.
My intention here is to bring us into a greater awareness of all
three of these inner parts so that we know what's happening when
they start yammering away in our mind. Try the journaling questions
that follow in order to help you separate from these three parts so
that they are not the ones who are running your life!
Journaling Questions:
1. List some of the rules that your Rule Maker created for
you when you were young. Which of these rules you are still living
by today, even though they might not still be applicable to your
life? Try not to judge yourself here; this is about awareness.
Choose one old rule and set an intention to let go of it this
month.
2. How has your Inner Perfectionist affected your life? If
that's too broad, narrow it down to how this part has affected a
certain relationship, job, hobby, passion, or dream. Create a card
for this Neter and dialogue with it. What gifts does it have for
you? How is it trying to help you?
3. In the past 24 hours, what has your Inner Critic said to you?
Can you see how this part is intimately related to your
Perfectionist and Rule Maker?
4. Write a dialogue among all three of these "Tricky Triangle"
parts. How do they relate to one another? Do they have
questions to ask of you?

Columnist: Linda Woolfson |

I'm Linda Woolfson, MA, PhD, a SoulCollage® Facilitator &
Trainer, writer, translator and creativity catalyst with a
particular passion for bringing words and images together to fire
our imagination and enhance our lives. This column explores
how you can use SoulCollage® to deepen your experience of the
summertime.
Inner Perfectionist
In
SoulCollage® Evolving, Seena Frost writes vividly about the
many "different sub-personalities" of our Committee suit,
chattering away day and night as if round a huge table having a
meeting. "Some we know well," she says, "because they are quite
conscious . . . . Some have a lot of energy while others have soft
or subtle energy." Well, for many of us in our Western culture, the
Inner Perfectionist has a huge amount of energy and an extremely
loud and insistent voice!
Daphne Rose,
my own Inner Perfectionist is the quintessential neat and tidy
home-keeper. Her linen cupboard is immaculate. Nothing ever
overlaps, gets tatty or caught in the door, and she never wears an
apron when cooking because she's too deft, focused and
well-coordinated ever to slop anything on her clothes.
I myself have never aspired to Daphne Rose's high domestic
standards. However, with some other activities she can really get
in the way: "When will you ever learn to file your work properly?
Your incapacity to grasp the simplest thing about the hierarchy of
information is absolutely embarrassing! " Or "Thirty years of
driving and still you can't park properly! Just look at you to-ing
and fro-ing ! And now you've scraped the car!"
When it comes to the things I really care about, such as creative
writing and SoulCollage®, Daphne Rose's eloquence can be quite
devastating: "So...you think you can create collages? What
nonsense! Look at you - you can't even cut a straight edge, let
alone use a craft knife properly!"
Yes, left to her own shrill-voiced devices, Daphne Rose can wreak
havoc.
The Inner Perfectionist has a dark soul and fascinating connections
with some other important Neters. Like the Critic (a close friend
and ally) she plays a vital part in our creative process. The
trouble with Daphne is not that she has nothing worthwhile to say,
but more that her timing is terrible. There is something truly
wonderful about aspiring to perfection. Without a vision to aspire
to, where would our creativity be? Yet Daphne never quite learns
that her moment of glory is brief - and right near the end of a
project, never at the beginning or midstream! It can be wonderfully
satisfying, when we've almost reached our creative goal, to spend
time lovingly polishing the mosaic tiles, trimming the edges of the
lawn with nail scissors or fine-tuning the punctuation. Daphne's
really good at all of these and her contribution (within bounds)
has genuine value.
You may find,
as I do, that some particularly dominating Committee Neters can
best be tempered by creating another presence in your deck -
connected, yet crucially different. My Gentle Listener is wonderful
at dealing with Daphne. He flows to the rhythms of the river of
life, where the process not the product matters. He says, I am
the one who is immersed in the silvery river of life. I listen
without judgement to the rippling flow of your music. This moment
we share is unique and I am loving it.
And sometimes Daphne actually stops and listens.!
So if you have an Inner Perfectionist who can sometimes become a
tormenter, delve into your imagination and create someone to help
you handle her. Best of all, put the two Neters into conversation -
you're bound to enjoy the results.

Each card below is a card that represents the Inner Perfectionist
from one SoulCollager's Deck.

Cool, crisp, calm...Perfect!
Council Suit
Ann
California
I am the one who looks over your shoulder and points
out "things." I have cool, clear perceptions and know the exact
word and format for everything you write, for every picture your
crop, for every communication you draft. I am ... the Editor to
your Creative. We make a good team, now that I have learned to let
you flow and go with the Wild Creative and especially now that you
have learned to stop cringing at every suggestion. I admire your
Spirit. Thank you for admiring my talent and skill
with...everything else!

Comparison Queen
Committee Suit
Christie
Hawaii
I am the one who compares myself to impossible
standards. I drag myself through my own insecurities. trying to
measure up to younger, prettier, richer, perhaps superficial(?)
facades. I am woefully unaware of the brilliance others might see
shining behind me.

Inner Critic
Committee Suit
Carol
Oregon
I am one who expects you to do everything right and
who badgers you if you fail. What is wrong with you?! I am one who
expects you to get busy, get it right & live up to my
expectations. You think I am grumpy but what I really am is sad. I
just want you to do well & be appreciated for our efforts. You
give me so little scope; it's like you never slow down to think how
I feel. We need to work together more.

Perfectionist

Anne Marie

I am the one who has to do everything perfectly, ALL the time. I
am the one who lies awake at night worrying and wondering how I can
be sure to do everything perfectly the next day. I am the one who
spins my mind around and around until I'm dizzy with the desire to
get everything just right. I am the one who is centered in and
focused on the gold star. I give you the impetus to do your best
work. I give you the desire to do well. I give you a good critical
eye. What I want is for you to ALWAYS do your best. I want you to
know that my energy gets out of control and keeps you up at night
because you allow that to happen, and it doesn't have to be that
way. I want you to remember that making a mistake is not the end of
the world, and that you can learn from your mistakes too.

I am the one who makes demands on you to live up to
your idealized self-image of perfection.
I am the one who rules with an iron fist.

I am the one who is the perfect hostess. My kitchen
is spotless and orderly. But - keeping up appearances can be
exhausting. Please note the drink in the hand and the knife to the
heart. What do I really want to tell my inner perfectionist? Fork
you!
Perfectionist

I am one
who cannot present my work unless all the curves are lovely, the
straight lines are straight and the pearls are perfectly cut. I
will all too often spend many extra hours working on a project that
for many, would be called 'done' at a much earlier stage, but for
me, it's not quite 'there' yet. I am one who is a
Perfectionist.

Please feel free to submit one of your cards for a
future issue by sending a reply email to this

September: Perfectionist
