Celebrating Summer

I wonder whether Gershwin, in 1933, when he was composing his languorously sensual music, had any idea that “Summertime” would become one of the most widely sung and loved songs of the whole 20th century and beyond.

And the livin is easy...”

Don’t these six simple words express the essence of summer, wherever in the world we may live?

Summertime: seeds planted in spring are swelling to maturity, spring’s blossoms in the orchard are transforming mysteriously into fruit, the swallows are twittering and fluttering round their nests, and newly hatched fledglings are testing their wings. It’s all happening! The struggle to survive through the winter has transformed into a time of abundance, a time to thrive and enjoy being alive.

The natural world at this time of year buzzes with activity. Summer’s strong, sunny energy invites us to get involved and participate in the burgeoning, colourful, world around us. This is the perfect time for bringing your dreams and ideas to fruition. Making a SoulCollage® card is a great way to summon up the spirit of summer creativity. The Gardener card I made some years ago still gets me into gear when I want to be active in a particular summery way:


This is my Gardener Card. This Neter says to me:

I am the one who reminds you how you love to get totally immersed, adding your own abundance to the joyful plethora surrounding you. Get your hands dirty! Let yourself be borne on the strong wave of summer’s energy.

So if you want to experience fully the zestful energy of summer, creating a SoulCollage® card to express your personal connection with the exuberance all around you can enhance your enjoyment of this season. Making such a SoulCollage® card – or series of cards – can also help you bring to maturity any projects, plans, or ambitions you may want to bring forth into the world this summer.

Yet the invitation this “easy” season extends to us can have a power more far-reaching than a simple call to action. In June (in the northern hemisphere) the days lengthen till dawn comes so early that it can go against the grain to try and stay asleep. As midsummer approaches, the days become like a wide-open eye which hardly closes at all. At the height of the summer, the Solstice (from the Latin “sun stand still”) brings a mysterious quietness, as if the sun itself pauses in its path, at the high point of the year, just before the nights once more slowly begin to lengthen.

This powerful “stand still time” in nature, coming as it does for many of us just before the summer holidays, reminds us that the summer is also a time to slow down, relax and replenish our energy. For many of us in our goal-driven Western culture being active is actually a lot less challenging than relaxing! So how do you respond when holiday time comes, and with it your opportunity to do absolutely nothing? This is, after all, the time to let the heat dissolve you into passivity as you lie on a beach, under a tree or on your back watching the stars on a hot summer night.


If you find it challenging to surrender to stillness, enjoy creating a SoulCollage® card to conjure up your particular form of dreamy sensual enjoyment and pure, glorious laziness. For me the hot sun, blue sea and sultriness of Portugal epitomize this dimension of summer, so when I find myself clinging to active mode, I place my Portugal card in a spot where I glimpse it often to remind myself that the call of the beach is as strong in summer as the call of my many emails!

My Portugal Neter says: I am the one who shows you that there’s more to life than working. See how I waft from movement into stillness, embrace daydreaming, sleep in the afternoon, sit sunning myself on the warm beach, watching a wave crest into sparkling surf, then another, then another. Time melts here where I am. Join me.
